Assist. Prof. U Pittsbugh - Modern European

Barbara McCloskey

Art Historian, Assistant Professor, Modern European
University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of History of Art and
Architecture invites applications to fill a tenure stream faculty
position at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective September 2005,
pending budgetary approval. We seek a scholar of European modernity,
who has a primary research focus in art and visual culture in any period
from the late 17th to the 19th centuries. The department is
particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching
explores relations between art and emergent modern practices of
knowledge and belief in domains such as science, commerce, politics,
philosophy, religion, or psychology.
The successful candidate will be an integral part of a Ph.D. program
with an already strong focus on modern and contemporary art. The
program has an impressive global reach, with expertise in Africa,
Australia, East Asia, Europe, and the United States. The
modern/contemporary program also benefits from allied programs elsewhere
in the university, such as a thriving Culture Studies program,
well-funded area studies centers, and top-ranked departments in
philosophy and the history and philosophy of science.
This is a tenure-stream position, for which the Ph.D. is required.
We prefer candidates with an interest in pedagogy and with the ability
to connect their research specialization to broader frameworks in the
study of modernity. Ideally candidates will have teaching experience in
19th century French modernism, even though their research focus may lie
outside that place or period.
Applicants should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae,
three letters of reference, writing sample, and evidence of teaching
effectiveness to: Search Committee, Department of the History of Art and
Architecture, 104 Frick Fine Arts, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh,
PA 15260. In order to ensure full consideration, applications must be
received by December 15, 2004. The University of Pittsburgh is an
Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of
the minority groups under-represented in academia are especially
encouraged to apply.
