Call for Papers: Ranaissance: Style in Context
Paper proposals are invited for a prospective panel at the annual
conference of the Renaissance Society of America (RSA), New York
City, March 25-27, 2004, Deadline: May 10th.
The aim of the session is not to present the traditional, generalized
approach to style through which it is said to "reflect" a zeitgeist. Instead
papers should consider ways in which style or stylistic motifs,
formulas, citations or modes of representation are seen to
communicate information of a social, political,
religious or philosophical nature to a specific audience. Based on closely
connected critical commentaries or images that can be related to known
texts, example of modes of representation to which such meanings have been
attributed should be the focus of the session. Papers are sought that
attempt to connect specific styles or stylistic elements (including
marginalia or distortions) with attitudes, ideas or distinct messages
intended for specific patrons, viewers or artistic circles. Provocative
papers with differing positions are welcomed.
