CALL FOR PAPERS
DEADLINE: May 1, 2003
The Art History Graduate Association (AHGA) at the University of
Virginia is seeking papers which explore the relationships between
memory and art. Papers may incorporate memory theory as well as
ideas of remembrance, tradition, memory versus history, and nostalgia
and should be rooted in historical, art historical, or literary
analysis. Possible themes include, but are not limited to:
Renaissance works that address allegories of memory; the tradition of
ekphrasis in Byzantine art; monuments and the politics of memory in
public art; modern artists assimilation of older art in their own
work; installation artists who use sensorial stimulation to evoke
memory in the viewer; and remembering the Holocaust in art and
museums.
Papers are welcome from graduate students working in all disciplines
and historical periods. One-page abstracts, without identifying
information, are due by May 1, 2003. Please include a separate cover
page with your name, paper title, e-mail address, phone number,
university department and departmental address.
