CALL FOR PAPERS

AUTHENTICITY AND PLACES OF MEMORY:
PROBLEMS, POTENTIALS, AND CHALLENGES

June 4th to June 8th, 2003
Stublicke Toplice, Republic of Croatia

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Memorial Museum
of
Josip Broz Tito, today open air museum the Old Village Museum in Kumrovec,
Croatia in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia
cordially invites you to participate in a symposium entitled Authenticity and
Places of Memory: Problems, Potentials and Challenges which will be held from
June 4th to 8th, 2003.

As societies on a variety of scales continue to experience the dizzying and
often disorienting effects of globalization, they are increasingly turning to
an
idealized past (invented or real) to define both who they are and their place
in
a rapidly changing world. Places of memory, because of their perceived ability
to make the past tangible and more accessible, have emerged as controversial
centers where these processes of definition and redefinition occur. To reflect
this growing importance and to acknowledge the interdisciplinary and
international nature of research on places of memory (e.g. museums and
memorials) experts working in a diverse array of fields including, but not
limited to, museology, anthropology, history, geography, architecture,
sociology, tourism studies and education are encouraged to attend.

The goal of the symposium is to facilitate dialogue between scholars and museum
experts working in different cultural contexts whose research addresses issues
surrounding authenticity and places of memory from both an applied and
theoretical perspective.

The following and similar topics are invited:

Reconstruction and Restoration
Preservation and Conservation
Representing and Defining Authenticity
Remembering and Forgetting
Museum Pedagogy
The Role of Museums in Cultural Tourism
