Call for Papers
2003 Buell Dissertation Colloquium on the history, theory, and
criticism of American architecture, urbanism, and landscape.

The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture
invites submissions for its Biennial Dissertation Colloquium, to be held
on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Columbia University. This event brings
together a select group of doctoral students working on dissertation
topics related to the history, theory, and criticism of American
architecture, urbanism, and landscape. Its purpose is to provide a forum
for discussion of innovative scholarship in these fields. Eight to ten
students from universities worldwide will be selected to present a
twenty-minute talk based on their dissertation research, followed by a
response from a distinguished scholar. The presentation should be based on
a self-contained chapter or portion of the studentÕs dissertation
research; it should not be an overview or synthesis of the dissertation as
a whole. ÒAmericanÓ means any part or aspect of the American continents,
including all of North and South America. Comparative and
cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged.

Students must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program and have
completed their coursework and at least one year of dissertation research.
Submissions should include a complete draft of the intended presentation,
including photocopies of illustrations. They must be postmarked no later
than Monday, January 20, 2003. They must be accompanied by a cover sheet
specifying the studentÕs institutional affiliation, postal and e-mail
addresses, and phone number; a 150-word abstract indicating the paperÕs
relationship to the overall dissertation topic; and a brief statement from
the studentÕs principal adviser certifying the applicantÕs status (stage
of completion) in the doctoral program. Faxed submissions will not be
accepted. Application materials will not be returned.

Professor Robert Bruegmann, of the University of Illinois at Chicago, and
Professor Mary McLeod, of Columbia University, will serve as conveners of
the colloquium. Papers selected for presentation will be announced in
mid-February. Each participating student will receive an honorarium of
$250. Overnight accommodations near the Columbia campus will be provided
if needed. Some additional funding toward travel expenses will be made
available to students coming from a distance. A reception and dinner will
follow the colloquium.

The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture is
part of Columbia UniversityÕs Graduate School of Architecture, Planning
and Preservation. Founded in 1982, the Center promotes the study of
American architecture, urbanism, and landscape through a variety of
scholarly and public programs.
