Conference "Fictions and Art History"

Conference 2001- "Fictions and Art History" Concordia

CALL FOR PAPERS

"It's amazing that the amount of news that happens in the world
everyday always just exactly fits the newspaper." -Jerry Seinfeld
There is always a story to be told, to be shared, distributed and
verified among our colleagues and friends. Often, events were taught
as history, with the presumption that this was a shared past, that all
enjoyed the privilege of gazing into the years gone by and could thus
explain the state of events as they appear. These events that explain
present contexts were written for, and by, a select group of people
whose limited interests excluded large numbers of thoughts and ideas,
people and stories to be told. Feminists, post-colonialists,
post-modernists, structuralist and post- structuralists (to name a
few) have all engaged in historical discussions, attempting to break down
the concept that history is a fixed and uninterrupted entity of linear
progression. One major affront to this notion is that history itself
is fiction, and, although based upon certain facts, it is a story told
and re-told by the institutional power-that-be in order to maintain a
grossly slanted view of the past.
The Art History Graduate Students' Association of Concordia University
(AHGSA) is interested in papers that deal with the following to be
presented at our Annual Conference, "Fictions and Art
History", scheduled for March 10th, 2001.
- History as Fiction/Fiction as History
- Fiction and History
- Fiction of Art/Art of Fiction
- etc...
As an Art History Student Association, we are primarily interested in
works dealing with arts, crafts and other visual objects, but this
does not exclude scholars from other disciplines. We invite graduate
scholars from a wide range of disciplines to participate, including,
but not limited to: literary studies, cultural studies, anthropology,
archaeology, art history, history, music theory, theatre studies, film
studies, communications, visual arts and art education.
AHGSA is aware, due to the interdisciplinary scope of the conference
subject, that many more topics may be covered. Please send your
one-page abstract and a cover letter stating your area of study to:
