Drawing Institute 2021-22 Fellowships at the Morgan Library & Museum
The Drawing Institute at the Morgan Library & Museum is a research center with a mission to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the role of drawing in the history of art. Making full use of the resources at the Morgan Library & Museum, the Drawing Institute is devoted to the study of drawings from all periods, exploring their centrality in the creative process.
Each year, the Drawing Institute offers multiple fellowships:
The nine-month Kress Predoctoral Fellowship is intended for an advanced-level graduate student who has completed all course work and exams and is currently engaged in research and writing of a doctoral dissertation in the history of art, some component of which pertains to the history, theory, collecting, function or interpretation of old master and/or modern drawings.
The nine-month Postdoctoral Fellowship is intended for a scholar in the first decade of their career following the completion of the Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree. The Postdoctoral Fellowship supports work on an independent research project relating to some aspect of the history, theory, collecting, function or interpretation of old master and/or modern drawings.
The Fellows are expected to spend their fellowship period in residence. The majority of the Fellows’ time will be spent on their proposed research projects, but the Fellows are expected to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Morgan and to attend Drawing Institute programs during their tenure.
Applicants are asked to submit the following:
- a cover letter addressing the applicant’s area of interest
- a curriculum vitae
- a research proposal (maximum 3 pages, double-spaced) specifying what the applicant wishes to accomplish during the fellowship period and detailing how he/she will utilize the Morgan’s resources and collections
- a writing sample, in English
- two letters from academic or professional references in support of the proposed project
All application materials must be in English and should be submitted online (Application Deadline: 30 Nov 20): https://www.themorgan.org/opportunities/drawing-institute-application
