La promoción artística desarrollada en las catedrales ha sido uno de los temas que más interés ha despertado entre la historiografía europea y todavía hoy lo sigue haciendo. Los procesos de construcción, su evolución a lo largo de los siglos, los proyectos de ornamentación, donaciones, artistas implicados, su carácter de focos artísticos y culturales, etc., han sido analizados a través de la, por lo general, rica documentación que atesoran los templos mayores en sus archivos (Navascués, 1997 y 2004; Ramallo, 2003 y 2007; Rivas, 2007; Payo, 2008; Lacarra, 2010). Esta realidad no solo se circunscribe a la Península Ibérica sino también al resto de territorios hispánicos con especial calado en los virreinatos italianos (Alfieri, 1983 y Di Natale, 2012) y en Hispanoamérica (Navascués, 2000 y Mazín, 2008 y 2017).
En el contexto de estos fenómenos, obispos y cabildos desarrollaron un papel destacado ya fuera impulsando o patrocinando proyectos arquitectónicos y decorativos de manera directa o bien canalizando los medios económicos necesarios para la ejecución de los mismos. En cuanto a los prelados su, generalmente, elevada posición social y cultural, así como el deseo de dejar huella de su paso por la sede que le había sido conferida para su gobierno, se tradujeron en el impulso de obras arquitectónicas y de ornato, así como de donaciones de obras creadas ex profeso o procedentes de su patrimonio personal.
A través de esta reunión científica queremos incidir en el estudio de estos aspectos en las catedrales hispánicas durante el siglo XVII y recordar el IV centenario de la llegada a la diócesis de Jaén (España) del cardenal Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval (Pontus. Gienn. 1619-1646; Pontus. Tolet. 1646-1665). Este prelado fue el gran impulsor de las obras de la catedral giennense y se erigió en un importante promotor de las artes en las dos sedes que ocupó, prestando especial atención a las cuestiones artísticas de sus iglesias mayores.

En este sentido, se aceptarán trabajos que versen sobre:
1. Promoción artística emprendida por obispos en las catedrales españolas: consecución de medios económicos, fundaciones, donaciones, etc., y la transformación de las viejas fábricas catedralicias con nuevos proyectos durante el siglo XVII.
2. La labor de los obispos españoles en los territorios hispánicos, con especial interés en Hispanoamérica e Italia.
3. En relación con el punto anterior, el análisis de las tareas de promoción de las artes desempeñadas en diferentes sedes, siguiendo el cursus honorum de estos clérigos.
4. El cardenal Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval: relación con otros prelados de su tiempo y con la corte; aspectos vinculados con su religiosidad y trabajo pastoral; su labor en las sedes episcopales de Jaén y Toledo.

Las propuestas serán evaluadas por la organización del Congreso y deberán tener un máximo de 300 palabras y estar acompañadas de un breve currículum vitae (hasta 200 palabras). Se enviarán a: mmpartalujaen.es, antes del 26 de septiembre de 2019. Los estudios se presentarán en español, italiano o inglés. En el asunto del correo electrónico hay que indicar: Congreso Internacional Obispos y promoción artística en las catedrales del mundo hispánico durante el siglo XVII. El resumen será enviado en formato doc. o pdf. Debe incluir nombre, apellidos y universidad de origen.
La aceptación o no de las propuestas se comunicará antes del 15 de octubre. La organización ofrecerá una bolsa de estudio en concepto de ayuda para el traslado hasta Jaén de los ponentes seleccionados. Cada participante dispondrá de 30 minutos para su presentación.

International Conference Bishops and arts patronage in the Hispanic World during the XVIIth century.

The arts patronage that had developed in cathedrals has been, and still is, one of the most interesting topics among European historiography. The construction processes, the development through the centuries, the ornamentation projects, donations, the artists involved, its character of artistic and cultural focuses, etc., has been analyzed through out, in general, the abundant information kept in the archives of the main temples (Navascués, 1997 and 2004; Ramallo, 2003 and 2007; Ricas, 2007; Payo 2008 and Lacarra, 2010). This had been the case not only in the Iberian Peninsula but also in the rest of the Hispanic territories, especially in the Italian Viceroyalties (Alfieri, 1983 and Di Natale, 2012) and in Spanish America (Navascués, 2000 and Mazín, 2008 y 2017).
In this context, bishops and cathedral chapters developed a main role either by promoting or sponsoring architectural and decorative projects directly, or by channeling the money needed for their execution. As for the prelates, their generally high social and cultural position, as well as the desire to leave a mark of their passage through the sees that had been conferred on them for their government, resulted in the promotion of architectural and ornamental works, as well as of donations of works created ex profeso or coming from their personal patrimony.
The purpose of this academic gathering is twofold: to contribute to the study of these aspects in the Hispanic cathedrals during the XVIIth century, and to commemorate the IVth centenary of the arrival in the diocese of Jaén (Spain) of Cardinal Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval (Pontus. Gienn.1619-1646; Pontus.Tolet. 1646-1665). This prelate was the great promoter of the works of the Cathedral of Jaén and he became an important promoter of the arts in the two Episcopal sees that he occupied, paying special attention to the artistic questions regarding the main temples.

In this sense, we will accept works dealing with:
1. Artistic promotion undertaken by bishops in Spanish cathedrals: fundraising, foundations, donations, etc., and the transformation of the old cathedrals into new projects during the XVIIth century.
2. The work of the Spanish bishops in the Hispanic territories, with special interest in Spanish America and Italy.
3. In relation to the previous point, the analysis of the tasks of promotion of the arts developed in different seats, following the cursus honorum of these clerics.
4. Cardinal Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval: his relationship with other prelates of his time and with the court; aspects related to his religiosity; his work in the episcopal sees of Jaén and Toledo.

The proposals will be evaluated by the organization of the Conference. The proposals must contain a maximum of 300 words and be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae (up to 200 words). They should be sent to: mmpartalujaen.es, by September 26th, 2019. The works will be presented in Spanish, Italian or English. In the subject of the e-mail it is necessary to indicate: International Conference Bishops and arts patronage in the Hispanic World during the XVIIth century. The summary needs to be sent in doc. format or PDF. It must include name, surname and University of origin.

The acceptance or rejection of the proposals will be communicated before October 15th. The organization will offer a study grant to help with the transportation to Jaén of the selected speakers. Each participant will have a 30 minutes slot for his or her presentation.
