France in Italy : French gothic art and artists in Italy

[French Version below]

The cultural exchange between the North and the South, between France and Italy, has always been important for scholarly research on medieval art. Be it for artists or artefacts, artistic ideas or engineering concepts, kings, nobles or popes and clergymen - the continuous exchange between the two regions has been mutually inspiring throughout all the Middle Ages. Members of the secular and clerical elite travelled regularly and provided thus a constant exchange of ideas and taste. Some periods, however, were more intense than others. During the 14th century, following the Angevin conquest of the kingdom of Sicily, the French presence in Italy intensified. A new wave of French artists and artworks from France inspired artists all over Italy. Ivories, glass painting and goldsmith’s work have been numbered among the media most open to the reception of new ideas from abroad, but foreign artists exercised their craft also in the domains of monumental painting, sculpture and architecture contributing thus to a continuous enriching of Italian artistic culture.

We welcome any proposal dealing
- with French artists working on Italian soil,
- with French artworks present in Italy, or
- with French patrons acting as documented intermediaries or carriers of ideas during the Gothic period, (late twelfth to the mid fifteenth century).
These questions have already generated an abundant scholarly literature. The aim of this conference is to shift the discourse away from general considerations of style and influences towards documented artists, patrons and artworks from France in Italy. We would like to focus on the material presence of French works of art in Italy and on revealing case studies and documents to test and to question current assumptions. The two-day conference will be held in Lausanne on the 14th and 15th November 2019. Travel expenses will mostly be taken over by the organizers.

Please submit a short proposal (ca. 1500 signs) and a short CV, in French, Italian or English, before 15th of July 2019 to
