Although Michelangelo Buonarroti saw himself primarily as a sculptor
and his opinions about the art of painting were not entirely positive,
some of the greatest painterly achievements in history are by his hand,
such as the frescoes in the Sistine and Pauline Chapels.

New findings have suggested that the artist also contributed to the
development of small devotional and religious oil paintings in the
1540s. Scholars have recognized that these paintings were inspired by
the famous drawings dedicated to the poet Vittoria Colonna which are
now in the British Museum in London, the Isabella Stewart Gardner
Museum in Boston, and the Louvre. However, the paintings have usually
been attributed to Michelangelo’s pupils.

This international colloquium organized by the Royal Netherlands
Institute in Rome will reconsider and critically discuss possible
evidence for new attributions. Various renowned Michelangelo scholars
will contribute their views, including Antonio Forcellino Christoph
Luitpold Frommel and Frank Zöllner.
