Exhibiting in Slovenia: A Symposium upon the 110th anniversary of the Jakopič Pavilion
We have recently celebrated a few respectable anniversaries of Slovenian art institutions. In 2017, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška in Slovenj Gradec celebrated its sixtieth anniversary. In 2018, we marked the centennial of the National Gallery of Slovenia and the seventieth anniversary of the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana. While, in 2019, we celebrate sixty-five years of the Maribor Art Gallery, forty-five years of Božidar Jakac Art Museum in Kostanjevica na Krki and the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Jakopič Pavilion. Jakopič Pavilion was the first venue built expressly for the exhibition of art in Ljubljana and was an important turning point in the history of art in Slovenia.
Theme of the symposium:
The symposium will focus on the medium of exhibition and the phenomenon of exhibiting art, architecture and design in Slovenia in the Central-European context from the 19th century to the present day. We encourage you to apply if you explore these topics in the most diverse contexts.
We welcome contributions that:
- discuss group and monographic exhibitions of Slovenian art, architecture and design both in Slovenia and in other art centres, or prominent international exhibitions and the exhibitions of foreign art in Slovenia;
- in the given geographical framework, deal with broader exhibition complexes, for example, the exhibitions of select institutions, artists or curators, exhibitions that can be connected or compared according to their content or some other aspect, periodic exhibitions and the like;
- focus on various organizational frameworks of exhibitions, from exhibitions organized by artists themselves to larger national presentations;
- examine the contemporaneous reception of exhibitions and their long-term impact or the various relations between an exhibition and art, politics and society.
We encourage an interdisciplinary and comparative approach in considering select exhibitions and exhibition practices. We welcome all content that provides an in-depth consideration of the symposium’s topic.
