New Dialogues in Art History at The Warburg Institute

Art history has been at the heart of The Warburg Institute since its foundation. Countless PhD theses have been researched and written using the unique Warburg Library and Photographic Collection. Discussion among peers studying at, or visiting, the Institute has in turn generated some of the most ground breaking ideas in art history of the past century. The dynamic between study resource and meeting-point has ensured The Warburg’s longstanding reputation as the pre-eminent centre for art historical research in the world.

‘New Dialogues in Art History’ was founded in October 2017 to continue this tradition among the next generation of art historians who use The Warburg and its resources for their doctoral research. PhD students meet to present and discuss their research with their peers with discussion revolving around a chosen theme. In order to mark the continuation of the seminar series into the new academic year, The Warburg Institute will host a one-day ‘New Dialogues’ conference funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) on Wednesday 26 September 2018.

The conference will complement the seminar group by organising the panels around the chosen themes of the 2017–18 seminar cycle.
These themes are:
- Attribution and Authorship
- Prestige and Patronage
- Making and Materiality
- Itinerancy and Interchange

All art historians who are currently working on or who have recently completed (within the last year) a doctoral thesis at any institution are invited to submit a proposal for one of the panels. Papers can focus on any art historical aspect, time period or topic and should be no longer than 20 minutes in length. Applicants are asked to indicate the theme(s) relevant to their research when submitting their proposal.

To apply, please send an abstract (maximum 300 words) and a brief biography (maximum 250 words) to NewArtDialoguesgmail.com by 29 June 2018 with the subject ‘Conference’. Successful applicants will be notified by 11 July. Limited funding is available to subsidise travel costs.
