Digital mapping, present in everyday life in the form of navigation devices, is increasingly finding its way into art history research. As part of the symposium Mapping the Art Market, organized by the department for Art Market Studies at the University of Cologne’s Institute of Art History, international researchers will be presenting their projects that pursue art historical issues with the assistance of location analysis.
A subsequent round table discussion will attempt to address fundamental questions. What contribution, for example, are digital recording and the visualization of the locations of artists, exhibitions, galleries, as well as other protagonists in the art system currently making to art history? What opportunities, challenges, and future developments do such mapping projects yield? What scope is there for further collaborations (including interdisciplinary ones)?
The occasion for the symposium is the launch of the digital mapping project Art | GALLERY GIS | Cologne, headed by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Nadine Oberste-Hetbleck, which has been under development in Cologne since March 2017. The geographically referenced visualization of galleries participating in ART COLOGNE during the first 30 years of its existence has permitted a highly sophisticated overview of this, the very first, fair for modern and contemporary art.

Symposium des Schwerpunktmoduls Kunstmarkt im Masterstudiengang Kunstgeschichte (1-Fach) am Kunsthistorischen Institut der Universität zu Köln

Digitales Mapping, im Alltag durch Navigationsgeräte präsent, hält immer mehr Einzug in kunsthistorische Forschungsprozesse. Im Rahmen des Symposiums Mapping the Art Market, welches vom Fachgebiet Kunstmarkt des Kunsthistorischen Instituts der Universität zu Köln organisiert wird, stellen internationale Forscherinnen ihre Projekte vor, die mit Hilfe von Standort-Analysen kunsthistorische Fragestellungen verfolgen.
In einer anschließenden gemeinsamen Diskussionsrunde werden grundsätzliche Themen behandelt: Welchen Beitrag leistet die digitale Erfassung sowie Visualisierung der Standorte von Künstlern, Ausstellungen, Galerien oder anderen Akteuren des Kunstsystems für die Kunstgeschichte aktuell? Vor welchen Chancen und Herausforderungen sowie zukünftigen Entwicklungen stehen solche Mapping-Projekte? Welche Möglichkeiten der Kooperationen (auch interdisziplinär) bestehen?
Anlass für das Symposium ist der Launch des digitalen Mapping-Projekts Art | GALLERY GIS | Cologne, das seit März 2017 unter der Leitung von Jun.-Prof. Dr. Nadine Oberste-Hetbleck in Köln entwickelt worden ist. Die geografisch referenzierte Visualisierung der in den ersten 30 Jahren an der ART COLOGNE teilnehmenden Galerien erlaubt einen differenzierten Blick auf die erste Messe für moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst.
