Minding the Time: New Perspectives on Old Master Drawings
The Morgan Library & Museum

How does looking at a drawing—an inherently portable art object—change the way we experience time and history? Which histories endure and which are lost? Drawing's status as a register of bodily behavior, as well as the variety of possible modes by which we encounter the work on paper (bookshops, storage boxes, reprints, and beyond), offer a rich range of fugitive perspectives. This theory-and-practice symposium, co-sponsored by the Drawing Center in SoHo, will feature scholars and contemporary artists who are engaging with Old Master drawings and prints in innovative ways, using drawings’ portability as a model for re-thinking history.

Organized by Katie Anania, a postdoctoral fellow at the Morgan Library & Museum's Drawing Institute, this emerging program draws on the rich holdings of Old Master works at the Morgan in order to generate critical dialogue about the canon. Archive theory, somatic studies, postcolonial theory, and material culture studies are some of the methods guiding speakers, and we anticipate a lively and far-reaching discussion.

Admission is free and open to all. Attendees can reserve a space for the event through the Eventbrite registration link on the event's webpage. Feel free to forward this invitation to interested colleagues.
