«…e manifactura de cello pincto per oro». Distinguishing features of mural painting in Lombardy in the late Gothic period: materials, techniques, models and workshops.

THEME AND QUERIES
Monza Illustrata is looking for contributions for its 2017 issue relating to mural painting in Lombardy, investigated from the point of view of techniques, materials, the use of models (circulation of drawings, sketchbooks, figures of itinerant artists of the time), of borrowings (from the art of goldsmithing, from panel painting, from illumination, from textiles, from sculpture and from stained glass windows) and within the reality of the workshops, including contracts and associations between artists, to please particular clients (organization of the execution of the wall painting: giornate (days’ work), use of cartoon transfer techniques, patrons, treatment and application of materials as gathered from restoration analyses, documentation on mural paintings, etc.) in the period from the second half of the 14th century to the second half of the 15th century.

The aim of the monograph is to offer to studies a collection of essays which can contribute to knowledge and to the debate on the subject of mural painting in Lombardy, over a time span of about a century, during which painting and decorative techniques were used that were in many ways multi-material and tangential to the goldsmith’s craft and to panel painting.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
If you are interested in this theme, please prepare and submit an abstract of not more than 3,000 characters (spaces included). Authors are also requested to attach a brief CV to their abstract. News of the outcome of the process of selection of contributions will be communicated no later than 30 June 2017.
The articles, which may be submitted in either Italian or English, must not exceed 30,000 characters (spaces included), including notes and bibliography, the submission deadline being 30 November 2017. As regards the required editorial guidelines, the selected authors will be contacted individually.
