Beyond Technocracy: Artistic Engagements with Cybernetics and Systems Theory
Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD scholarship, titled Beyond Technocracy: Artistic Engagements with Cybernetics and Systems Theory, under the supervision of Dr Tim Stott at the School of Creative Arts, Dublin Institute of Technology.
The research project is to study the integration of cybernetics and other forms of systems thinking into artistic practice and criticism since cybernetics was consolidated as a discipline in the late 1940s. Particular attention will be given to the expansion of cybernetic and systems-theoretical principles beyond their initial applications in engineering, computing, and psychiatry, especially where conceived as a corrective to a technocratic post-war society.
Applications are invited in all periods and subject domains relevant to the research project. Although falling primarily within the discipline of art history, this will be an interdisciplinary project and candidates will require competence in diverse fields of knowledge.
The scholarship provides a stipend of €11,000 per annum for up to four years, subject to annual evaluation.
All inquiries about the scholarship should be sent to Dr Tim Stott at tim.stottdit.ie.
