Call for Papers: Iannis Xenakis - in Memoriam International Conference

Iannis Xenakis is one of the most celebrated composers and iconic
figures of the twentieth century. He was one of the most influential
thinkers of the past century not only in the field of music but also in
various scientific pursuits. His music and philosophy have inspired a
whole generation of composers and performers, and this conference, which
coincides with the ten-year anniversary of his death, aims to shed light
on lesser-known aspects of his life and work.

The Department of Arts of the European University Cyprus is proud to
announce a Call for papers, performances and site specific musical
installations for The Iannis Xenakis - in Memoriam International
Conference to take place at European University Cyprus on 3, 4 & 5
November 2011. We invite composers, performers and musicologists - as
well as architectural and art historians - to Cyprus, an island that has
been a geographical and cultural cross point throughout its history, to
pay tribute to this great thinker.

The presentations should not exceed 20 minutes. 10 minutes will be
allocated for further discussion and questions following each
presentation.

Proposed performances of Xenakis' works should last no longer than 40
minutes, and details about the scale of installations are available upon
request (see below for contact details).

Those interested should send a 300 word abstract (or performance samples
for performers) as well as a short biography (250 words maximum) by 15
June 2011 to Dr Evis Sammoutis at E.Sammoutiseuc.ac.cy with the subject
line Iannis Xenakis - in Memoriam International Conference. For
additional information, please contact Dr Georgia Petroudi at
G.Petroudieuc.ac.cy with the subject line Iannis Xenakis - in Memoriam
International Conference.

Xenakis' revolutionary approach to orchestration / use of instrumental
and vocal techniques
Analytical approaches to Xenakis' compositions
Xenakis and the study of music perception

Category 2 - Biographical, philosophical and other approaches to Xenakis

Category 3 - Performing Xenakis
Performing Xenakis: practicalities and impracticalities, possibilities
and impossibilities
"Authentic" interpretations of Xenakis' works
Live lecture performances of Xenakis' works

Category 4 - "Frozen Music": Music and architecture, a palindromic
relationship
For composers, the University is also extending a call for site-specific
installations in some of Nicosia's architectural marvels. The
installations should demonstrate the relationship between sound and
space / architecture. Nicosia is still the only divided European capital
with a fascinating mixture of architectural spaces that offer a wealth
of inspiration. Interested composers can contact Dr Evis Sammoutis for
additional info.
