François Daulte Grant for Research on Impressionism

Since 2017, the Musée Fabre in Montpellier has held a "François Daulte" collection, consisting of the archive of the art historian, author of the first catalog raisonné of Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870). In addition to this collection, there is an exceptional collection of 76 autograph letters from Frédéric Bazille, 8 letters from his family and 30 letters from his artist friends: Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Edmond Maître in particular.

In order to enhance the value of this collection and more broadly the research of François Daulte, the "François Daulte" research grant (10, 000 €) will support research in history and art history in line with the fields of study of François Daulte, particularly on the following themes :

- The life and work of Frédéric Bazille, Alfred Sisley and Auguste Renoir
- The beginnings of Impressionism
- Impressionism and the graphic arts
- Exhibiting and collecting Impressionism
- The history of art criticism during the second half of the 19th century
- The cultural and artistic life in Montpellier during the second half of the 19th century

Eligibility
The "François Daulte Grant" fellowship will be open to PhD students and post-doctoral researchers in history and art history.
It will be open to French and English speaking candidates.

Expected
The endowment of the "François Daulte" grant will depend on the following selection criteria
- Relevance and novelty of the proposed research
- Method of the proposed research
- Identification of the fonds
- Valorization and studies of the Daulte archives and other collections of the Musée Fabre
The grant must result in a publication related to the research project, digital or paper, during the two years following the allocation of the grant.

Terms and conditions of application
To be eligible for the award, the candidate must be registered as a PhD student or hold a PhD at the time of submission of the application.
Each candidate will have to write an application file for the " François Daulte " grant with :
- A four-page presentation in French or English (excluding bibliographies and images) of the project, as well as the planned work schedule and a provisional budget
- A CV, including the list of publications, works, conferences, colloquia, and teaching
- A letter of intent
- The PhD report if available
- A possible letter of recommendation from a scientific personality supporting the application
- The application form duly completed, dated and signed (to be obtained by writing to Vanessa Furdin : vanessa.furdinmontpellier.fr)

All documents must be sent to the Fabre Museum in digital form with the mention "François Daulte" by e-mail to the following address: vanessa.furdinmontpellier.fr
The application must be sent no later than November 30, 2026.

The Jury
The winner will be chosen by a jury composed of researchers and professionals from the art world. It is composed of seven members:
- The Director of the Musée Fabre
- The Sponsors of the grant
- The curator responsible for 19th-century art at the Musée Fabre
- Three qualified individuals, including a curator specialising in painting from the Musée d’Orsay’s period and a lecturer-researcher specialising in that period.
The jury's decision is final and without appeal. The jury reserves the right not to award a prize in case of insufficient quality of the applications.
