International conference Vittorio Gregotti. The Architect’s Territories.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Vittorio Gregotti (1927–2020), the Politecnico di Milano and CASVA – Centro di Alti Studi sulle Arti Visive are organizing an international conference dedicated to this complex figure of intellectual and architect, whose work deeply shaped postwar Italian and European architectural cultures.

Editor of influential journals, author of seminal books and essays, professor at prestigious universities, curator of exhibitions and internationally significant events, and founder and driving force behind several professional practices that, over more than fifty years, developed and realized hundreds of projects ranging from the scale of the object to that of entire cities, Vittorio Gregotti persistently occupied every domain available to the architectural profession, fostering cultural movements and provoking enduring debates.

The conference aims to investigate, from both historical and critical perspectives, Vittorio Gregotti's many activities. It also seeks to assess his legacy by reflecting on the contemporary relevance of his writings and projects.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Two types of contributions are invited, and may be submitted within the following thematic sessions:

1. RESEARCH PAPERS
– Contributions are invited from architectural historians and critics working across all scales of design. Papers should present original research based on documents related to the various activities carried out by Vittorio Gregotti and held in collections such as the archives of the Architetti Associati (Gregotti–Meneghetti–Stoppino) and Gregotti Associati at CASVA in Milan; the Vittorio Gregotti Archive at the University Iuav of Venice; the Vittorio Gregotti Collection at the Centre Pompidou (MNAM) in Paris; the archives of Triennale Milano; the Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts (ASAC) of the Venice Biennale; and other relevant repositories.

The inventory of the Gregotti Archive at CASVA can be consulted at: https://lombardiarchivi.servizirl.it/fonds/148435

Those wishing to propose a contribution are invited to submit an abstract (300 words) and a short biographical note, including institutional affiliation (100 words), to gregotti100gmail.com by 31 July 2026. The proposal should be submitted as a single PDF file. Submissions will undergo an initial evaluation by the Scientific Committee, followed by a peer-review process.

2. LEGACY AND CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE
– Contributions and testimonies are invited from architects working across different scales of design who wish to present a personal reflection on the legacy and contemporary relevance of Vittorio Gregotti’s thought and built work. Particular attention will be given to discussions surrounding the dual role of architect-intellectual and manager of a large professional practice: a defining aspect of Gregotti’s career. Is this model of professional practice and cultural-political engagement—through activities such as writing books, editing journals, and participating in public debate—still viable today? If so, in what forms and through what means?
Contributions in this session will be presented through round tables and thematic forums. Rather than proposing a conventional paper or presentation, participants are invited to formulate a set of themes, propositions, and critical positions to be discussed collectively.
