The Institut Giacometti in Paris runs a research programme on the history of modern art: the "École des Modernités". The aim of this programme is to support original projects in the study of the art of the modern period (1905-1960).
This call for applications is addressed to young researchers whose work focuses on the art of the modern period (1905-1960) and who offer original perspectives, either through choice of subject matter or the angle adopted. Special consideration will be given to a wide-ranging approach to art in the context of the study of cosmopolitan modernity in Paris.
The École des Modernités research residencies provide researchers with a studio apartment at the Institut Giacometti, 5, rue Victor Schœlcher in Paris (14th arrondissement), for a period of 3 weeks (doctoral and post-doctoral research – extendable to 6 weeks, on justified request) or 1 week (pre-doctoral research, Master's level). In addition to a fully equipped self-contained studio flat, researchers have access to the Institut Giacometti’s archives and library during opening hours. The residencies are intended to support the research work of young art historians.
Two types of residencies are being offered:
1. Research residencies at doctoral and post-doctoral level:
- Residencies lasting 3 weeks, which may be extended to 6 weeks upon justified request and in agreement with the head of the École des Modernités
2. Research residencies at pre-doctoral level (Master’s 1 or 2):
- Residencies lasting 1 week, which may be extended to 2 weeks upon justified request and in agreement with the head of the École des Modernités
Residencies are available all year round.
Admission requirements:
The researcher's work should fall within the chronological (1901-1960) and thematic framework of the École des Modernités, and justify the need to consult Parisian archives and research libraries (recourse to the Fondation Giacometti's own archives is particularly encouraged).
Researchers at the pre-doctoral and doctoral levels must justify their registration in a university or research centre. Post-doctoral researchers must specify the precise framework in which they are working.
The Institut Giacometti is not in a position to cover any additional costs (e.g., transport or daily subsistence allowances are not included).
Application requirements:
The application should include:
- a research project, justifying the need to work in archives and libraries and to make appointments, etc., in Paris (4,000 characters maximum, including spaces).
- a proposed timetable for the residency and research, to be confirmed with the Institut Giacometti team according to the availability of the research studio flat
- a curriculum vitae specifying the applicant's current situation, training, research, and academic publications and communications.
Application:
All the documents must be sent in PDF format in the same mailing (by titling the files as follows: SURNAME_Firstname_residence.pdf, and specifying the desired residency and period. Only applications containing all these elements will be considered.
Complete applications must be sent to the Institut Giacometti (recherchefondation-giacometti.fr), by February 15, 2026 at the latest.
Apart from this call for applications, Institut Giacometti also welcomes unsolicited proposals throughout the year, to be sent either by post or to recherchefondation-giacometti.fr, for the attention of Hugo Daniel, PhD, Head of the programme.
Due to the annually limited number of research residencies (only one studio apartment being available), applicants are strongly encouraged to reapply if their project is not selected at the first application.
