The Institute of Art History (IAH) (www.ipu.hr), based in Zagreb with a branch in Split, is a public research institution dedicated to the study of the history and theory of Croatian visual arts. A member of the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art (RIHA), IAH employs 37 staff members, including 19 researchers and art historians, and 10 expert associates. The Institute’s primary mission is to conduct fundamental and applied research, interpret and evaluate art phenomena, monuments, and significant personalities within Croatia, while placing this heritage within national, regional, and European contexts.

The Institute of Art History (IAH) is opening a call for applications for the position of:

Postdoctoral Researcher in Art History (f/m) (1 position)

Mentor: Dr. Sc. Tamara Bjažić Klarin, M.Arch.

Research Area: Architectural and urban discourse of housing

This position is part of the European Research Council (ERC) project: “Pravo na stan: Proizvodnja prostora svakodnevnog življenja u Jugoslaviji (1945.-1991.)” / “Right to Housing: the Production of Spaces of Everyday Life in Yugoslavia (1945-1991)”, funded by the Consolidator Grant (Housing.Yu ERC-CoG No. 101171985).

Housing.Yu researches the production of spaces of everyday life in Yugoslavia (1945–1991), which still constitutes about 60–70% of the current housing stock of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The project will employ a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and methodologically innovative approach to the government’s actions, urban planners, architects, contractors, and citizen-users. The project aims to understand the critical phenomena of mass housing in a socialist state, including its policies, estate development, citizen participation and related knowledge exchange between Western and Eastern Europe.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in art history and have relevant research experience. Fluent in English. Motivation and prior achievements in research or academic activities will be considered advantageous.

This is a full-time position, offered under a fixed-term four-year (4) contract. The performance of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be evaluated annually.

General conditions: Candidates must meet the general conditions for employment and the criteria prescribed by the Law and the general acts of the Institute.

Advantage: recognitions, awards, etc. for excellence in studying and research experience in the fields of Art History, History or Architecture and Urban planning, participation in scientific research projects, published papers and presentations at scientific conferences.

Basic knowledge of one of the following languages is desirable: German, French, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish, Swedish, Dutch or Danish, experience in archival work and digital data management.

The requirement for foreign citizens is knowledge of the Croatian language at an intermediate level or one of the related languages (Slovenian, Serbian, Bosnian, Macedonian, Montenegrin).

Salary:
The salary will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and applicable Croatian legislation.
