PostDoc Fellowships, South African Art, University of Johannesburg

University of Johannesburg, City of Johannesburg (South Africa), Jan 01, 2026
Application deadline: Sep 15, 2025

Brenda Schmahmann, University of Johannesburg

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with SARChI chair in South African Art & Visual Culture.

Prof Brenda Schmahmann, South African Research Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture
(Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at University of Johannesburg) is seeking to appoint one or more postdoctoral research fellows to work with her for a period of between one and three years. A successful applicant will take up a fellowship as soon as possible and by no later than the beginning of 2026.

Envisaged research should focus on South African topics (or topics pertinent to South Africa) that fall broadly within at least one of the following three rubrics:
- Gender and Visual Culture
- Public Art and Curating
- Art and Design in the Context of Community Projects

In defining their envisaged work, candidates are encouraged to focus primarily on the writing of articles for refereed journals.

Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degrees within the last five years. An applicant completing a PhD should please note that they can only take up this position when notified officially of receipt of a PhD and not while it is still under examination.

Fellows appointed as grantholder-linked National Research Foundation (NRF) postdoctoral fellows will be paid a non-taxable allowance of R 320 000 per annum and R 50 000 for conference attendance, conference costs, fieldwork and other research costs. As the fellowship is principally to enable a PDRF to focus on research, the fellowship holder may not hold a full-time salaried employment concurrently with the fellowship, but will be allowed to undertake up to twelve hours per week of additional work.

While visits elsewhere for field studies and conferences are acceptable and envisaged, a successful incumbent will be expected to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Research productivity and proven capacity is the primary criterion that will be considered.

If you are interested in and eligible for this position, please contact Prof Brenda Schahmann: brendasuj.ac.za for an application form.

Applications must be submitted by September 15, 2025.
