Director, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf, Germany
Application deadline: May 25, 2025

Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf

The Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen in Düsseldorf is seeking to appoint a new director (artistic and managing director) to begin October 1, 2025.

The Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen in Düsseldorf was founded in 1829 and is among the oldest Kunstvereine (art associations) in Germany. As an independent institution aimed at supporting the production, presentation, and mediation of contemporary art, it regularly showcases new international positions and commissions artists to develop new and site-specific works.

We are seeking a new director to continue the innovative work of the Kunstverein alongside a small, highly motivated team. Starting date will be October 1, 2025. The work will focus on developing and delivering contemporary art exhibitions, publications, and supporting programs. In addition to curatorial work, a key aspect of the role will be the shaping of the Kunstverein’s profile—engaging with the general public, the local community, cultural policy makers, and peers in the field. The director also assumes executive responsibility for the Kunstverein’s finances.

Another key area of responsibility is fostering the community and network of the Kunstverein members, counting about 2,500 members, which includes organizing multiple day trips, guided tours, and specially conceived member events.

For this demanding and multifaceted role with ample creative scope, we are looking for a candidate with outstanding knowledge of contemporary art, strong networks within Germany and internationally, and several years of institutional experience. The ideal candidate will have proven expertise in conceiving, planning, and realizing exhibitions and in working with artists. The role also requires extensive experience and knowledge with regards to third-party fundraising, project management, and liaising with public funding bodies. Fluency in German and English is expected.

Please send your application (cover letter; CV; certificates/diplomas; names of two to three referees who may be contacted; and a statement of no more than two pages outlining your past curatorial work) exclusively in digital form (PDF, max. 5 MB) to the Chairman of the Board, Georg Kulenkampff, at bewerbungkunstverein-duesseldorf.de

Please address any questions about this position to Hanna Mertens (Mon–Wed) or Jasmin Klumpp (Wed–Fri). They can be contacted by telephone on 0211 21074211.

The application deadline is May 25, 2025. Interviews are scheduled for late June 2025.
