Solace in Painting (Arlington, 20 Feb-20 Mar 25)

The University of Texas at Arlington, Feb 20–Mar 20, 2025

Fletcher Coleman, Texas

Speaker Series: "Solace in Painting: Reflecting on a Tumultuous Century".

The Gallery at UTA is pleased to present a series of lectures in conjunction with the exhibition, "Solace in Painting: Reflecting on a Tumultuous Century," organized by Dr. Fletcher Coleman, Assistant Professor of Art History and Museum Studies, University of Texas at Arlington.

The exhibition, which is on view from February 3 through March 29, 2025, explores how we characterize the artwork of conflicted artists of the Asian diaspora who never produced overt “conflict art.” This traveling exhibition features three little-researched diasporic painters — Chao Shao-an (1905-1998), Keisho Okayama (1934-2018), and Ann Phong (1957-) —brought together through their unusual approaches to painting shared experiences of conflict in Asia.

A speaker series is being held engaging with themes from the exhibition:

Dr. Yukio Lippit, Harvard University:
“Asian Art, Asian American Art, and some things in-between,”
Thurs., Feb. 6, 4:00-5:30pm CST

Louie Palu, award-winning photojournalist and documentarian:
“Visualizing Conflict in a Post-9/11 World,"
Thurs., Feb. 20, 4:00-5:30pm CST

Dr. Christopher K. Tong, University of Maryland, Baltimore County:
New book lecture on ecological change and diasporic communities
Thurs., Feb. 27, 4:00-5:30pm CST

Dr. Fletcher Coleman, University of Texas at Arlington:
"Curating Connections and Questioning Categories"
Thurs., March 20, 12:00-1:00pm CST

All events take place in The Gallery at UTA in 169 Fine Arts Building at 502 S. Cooper Street, Arlington and are free and open to everyone. Further information can be found for each event at the exhibition website: https://solaceinpainting.com/

Following its conclusion at UTA, the exhibition will travel to The University of Nebraska at Omaha, Sept.-Nov. 2025, where additional programming will be held.
