Projekt-Launch: "Rekonstruktion der abhanden gekommenen Kunstwerke aus dem Eigentum von Siegfried, Betty und Walter Lämmle".

Mit Förderung durch das Deutsche Zentrum Kulturgutverluste werden vom 1.10.2024 - 30.09. 2026 am Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) die abhanden gekommenen Kunstwerke aus dem Eigentum von Siegfried (1863-1953), Betty (1880-1948) und Walter (1902-1996) Lämmle recherchiert.

Der als jüdisch verfolgte Münchner Kunsthändler Siegfried Lämmle wurde am 28. August 1935 aus der Reichskammer der Bildenden Künste ausgeschlossen, was einem Berufsverbot gleichkam. Er wurde gezwungen, seine Kunsthandlung aufzulösen. Sowohl der Warenbestand als auch – soweit derzeit bekannt – die Objekte aus der Privatsammlung der Familie wurden in der Folge teils unter Zwang verkauft, teils beschlagnahmt: Das Geschäft wurde spätestens im Juni 1937 aufgegeben und der Warenbestand in mehreren Auktionen durch das Münchner Auktionshaus Adolf Weinmüller versteigert. Im Rahmen der Vorbereitung der Emigration wurde das Umzugsgut bei einer Münchner Möbelspedition deponiert. Die Familie emigrierte Ende September 1938 in die USA. Im November 1938 wurden die bei der Spedition lagernden Gegenstände von der Gestapo beschlagnahmt und „verwertet“, ohne dass die Familie Lämmle über den Erlös hätte verfügen können. Nach dem Entzug der Staatsbürgerschaft im Mai 1939 verfiel das Vermögen der Familie Lämmle dem Deutschen Reich.

Im Rahmen des Projekts sollen die Objekte im Eigentum von Familie und Kunsthandlung identifiziert werden, die im Nationalsozialismus und insbesondere ab Sommer 1935 abhandenkamen, die Umstände des Verlusts recherchiert und ggfs. der heutige Standort der Objekte in Erfahrung gebracht werden.

Das Projekt wird in Zusammenarbeit mit Nina McGehee (Denver), Enkelin von Gertrude Lämmle und Urenkelin von Siegfried und Betty Lämmle, durchgeführt. Das ZI kooperiert in diesem Projekt zudem mit dem HCPO, das die Nachfahren der Familie Lämmle berät.

Projekt-Launch: "Reconstruction of the lost works of art from the property of Siegfried, Betty and Walter Lämmle".

From October 2024, a research project will start as part of the provenance research activities at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) in Munich. The focus of the project, which is funded by the German Lost Art Foundation for two years, are the objects that were formerly part of the property of the Jewish art dealer family Siegfried (1863-1953), Betty (1880-1948) and Walter (1902-1996) Lämmle (collection and stock).

The Munich art dealer Siegfried Lämmle, who was persecuted for being Jewish, was expelled from the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts on August 28, 1935, which amounted to a professional ban. He was forced to close his art shop. Both the inventory and – as far as is currently known – the objects from the family's private collection were subsequently sold under duress, or confiscated: the business was given up in June 1937 at the latest and the inventory was sold in several auctions by the Munich auction house Adolf Weinmüller. As part of the preparation for emigration, the belongings were deposited with a Munich furniture shipping company. The family emigrated to the USA at the end of September 1938. In November 1938, the items stored at the shipping company were confiscated by the Gestapo and “processed” without the Lämmle family being able to dispose of the proceeds. After their citizenship was revoked in May 1939, the Lämmle family's assets were forfeited to the German Reich.

The aim of the project is to identify objects owned by the Lämmle family and the Lämmle Art Gallery that were lost during National Socialism, in particular after the summer of 1935, to research the context of the losses and to determine the current location of the objects.

The project is being carried out in cooperation with Nina McGehee (Denver), granddaughter of Gertrude Lämmle and great-granddaughter of Siegfried and Betty Lämmle. The ZI is also cooperating in this project with the Holocaust Claims Processing Office of the New York State Department of Financial Services (HCPO), which is working with the descendants of the Lämmle family.
