The Visual Contagions. Hackathon (Geneva, 17-19 Jun 24)

Geneva, Switzerland, Jun 17–19, 2024
Deadline: May 19, 2024

Adélaïde Quenson

The Visual Contagions project welcomes submissions for a two-day hackathon focusing on cultural globalization. This collaborative event aims to unite participants in a collective exploration of datasets provided by the project, or they are encouraged to contribute their own. Under the expert guidance of digital humanities specialists, participants will work together to create visually engaging representations of cultural globalization, accompanied by concise explanatory texts.

A diverse range of thematic areas will be available for exploration, including artworks and magazines, GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums), the Internet, cinema, music, fashion, video games, literature, television, social networks, culinary culture, selfies, scents, modes of transportation, collecting practices, and literary translation, among others. We enthusiastically welcome additional ideas!

The collaborative projects developed during the hackathon will mainly be showcased and assessed at the Image Deluge and Globalization conference, occurring immediately thereafter. For this exciting endeavor, the Visual Contagions project will offer three awards: the Globalization Prize, recognizing the most outstanding project; the Imagination Prize, celebrating the most innovative visualization; and the Public Prize, honoring the project deemed most popular by conference attendees.

Registration for the hackathon is now open. You can either submit a challenge idea with a dataset or simply register to participate. Registrations are open until May 19, 2024. Final datasets must be submitted by June 2, 2024.

The event will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from Monday, June 17, to Wednesday, June 19, 2024, followed by the Image Deluge & Globalization conference from June 19 to June 21. Both events are organized by the Digital Humanities Chair at the University of Geneva as part of the Visual Contagions SNF project.

The venue for the event will be the Uni Les Philosophes, Boulevard des Philosophes 22 and the Museum of Art and History at GamMAH (Promenade du Pin 5, Geneva).
