2013 Terra Foundation Publication Grants & Essay Prize

International Essay Prize for American Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum
This prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art (pre-1980). Manuscripts should advance understanding of American art, demonstrating new findings and original perspectives. The prize-winning essay will be translated and published in the scholarly journal American Art. Additionally, the winner receives a $1,000 award and a $2,000 travel stipend to give a presentation in Washington, D.C., and meet with museum staff and fellows. These grants provide support for publication projects on historical American art (pre-1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. Projects may include translations of texts on American art; publications written by non-U.S. scholars or those with a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context. Projects must be under contract for publication. Books may receive up to $30,000; articles may receive up to $3,000.
