Rijeka, Croatia, Nov 16–17, 2023
Deadline: Jun 30, 2023

Palma Karković Takalić

Third International Conference, Studies in Art History and Archaeology of the North Adriatic from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.

Department of Ancient and Medieval Art, University of Rijeka, in collaboration with Maritime and Historical Museum of Croatian Litoral Rijeka, is pleased to announce a call for papers for the 3rd international conference dedicated to the themes and subjects in art history and archaeology from Antiquity to the Middle Ages of the northern Adriatic. The conference will be held in Rijeka, Croatia, on November 16th and 17th, 2023.

The conference themes are closely related to research projects co-financed by the University of Rijeka: Migrations, Identities and the Context of Medieval Art in Kvarner and Contextualization of Roman and Early Medieval Sculpture on the Island of Krk Based on Mineralogical-petrographic and Chemical Analysis of the Stone Sculpture. Both projects focus on the artistic and cultural heritage of Kvarner, an area located on the northern part of the eastern coast of the Adriatic. From Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages, Kvarner was a place of intersection of roads and maritime routes between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. This played an essential role in forming the region as an area of significant cultural and artistic exchange, which is reflected in specific, heterogeneous character of its material culture, sculpture, architecture, and painting.

In this context, the participants are invited to submit proposals related to the following topics:
- materiality of objects and works of art, their origin, exchange, cultural contacts, iconography;
- transfers of specific artistic ideas, models and language; the development of “stylistic language”;
- transfer, relocation and reuse of monuments (or parts of the monuments) for new constructions; changes of original context of monuments;
- material culture and archaeological sites in context; new perspectives on architecture, architectural decoration, sculpture, painting;
- roads and maritime routes; continuity and change between Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

The conference aims to open a dialogue between scholars of ancient and medieval art history and archaeology, seeking to examine topics related to the entire northern Adriatic region.

Please send a 300-word proposal and a short CV as a single Word document to arthistoriffri.uniri.hr, no later than June 30th, 2023. Selected speakers will be notified by the end of July 15th, 2023.

All proposals should also include:
- a title
- your name
- e-mail
- academic affiliation (if applicable)

We invite proposals suitable for 20-minute presentations. Conference languages are Croatian, English, Italian and Slovenian.

The conference fee is 50 euros, and it includes administration and organisational costs, conference materials, lunch and coffee breaks.
Organizing committee invites participants to contribute with their papers to an edited volume published by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka. Each paper will be evaluated by the scientific committee and double-blind peer-reviewed for the publication. The publication will be accessible online.
