For the seminar Sialussuartut / Like a Cloudburst we welcome poster presentations from younger scholars, artists, and art students.

In fall 2023, the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst, SMK) will open an exhibition by the acclaimed artist Jessie Kleemann (1959-) - the first solo exhibition by a Kalaaleq artist organized by the museum. The seminar “Sialussuartut / Like a Cloudburst” honors Kleemann’s esteemed, four decade-long career and her efforts to expand the field of possibility for Kalaallit artists. Taking its point of departure in Kleemann’s experimental practice, the symposium aims to spark renewed dialogue about contemporary Greenlandic art, about the status of embodied action in art, and about the politics and aesthetics of decolonization.

The seminar will feature two poster sessions for which we now seek proposals. With these sessions, we aim to engage younger researchers, artists, and art students in order to build bridges between senior and emerging researchers and to unfold the seminar theme in the fullest.

Proposals can address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Jessie Kleemann’s art practice
- Indigenous feminism and body art
- Modern and contemporary Greenlandic art
- Greenlandic art exhibition and museum histories and/or practices
- Decolonization in Greenland and the arctic
- Greenlandic and arctic collaborations and networks within the arts

To propose a poster presentation, please send an abstract (max. 250 words) and/or sketches for a poster (max. 2 pages) together with a short bio (max 50 words) to avjsmk.dk no later than March 1, 2023.

Practical information
The posters will be presented during 2 x 30 mins poster sessions during the seminar. Presenters will have the opportunity to share their research with seminar participants during these informal, 30 minute sessions. The posters can be designed in a variety of formats. They may include a combination of illustrations and text that provide a summary of topics you have previously researched or studied, the outline of a research paper or critical essay, or a selection of the presenter’s own artworks.

Posters should not exceed the following dimensions: 120 cm wide x 160 cm tall (approx. 47 x 63 inches). Posters will be placed on a standard 120 cm x 160 cm poster board. You can bring your poster yourself, or we can arrange to print it in Copenhagen.

As a participant in the seminar, you will naturally be invited to participate in the full programme (including food and beverages).

Travel grants
We can offer up to 4 travel grants of up to 15.000 DKK each (roughly 2.000 €) to offset travel expenses related to your participation in the seminar.

Applications for travel grants are open to all presenters in the poster sessions, but presenters from Ilisimatusarfik (University of Greenland) and Nuuk Art School will be prioritized. If you wish to apply for a travel grant, please submit a short (max. 200 words) application for the travel grant together with your proposal.
