Key Words: Gender, LGTBQ+, Trans, Feminism, Power, Environment, Visual Culture, Material Culture, Artifacts, Built Spaces.

ReBus, the postgraduate journal of Art History and Theory at the University of Essex, is soliciting papers for its 10th issue, entitled Gender, Society, and Art. Gender issues cut across all areas of human life and have a direct impact on government policies, urban spaces, architecture, visual and material culture, media representation and discourse. As such, we plan to dedicate this issue to papers that explore such issues and contribute to art history’s wider historiography on gender, including gender’s intersection and engagement with the LGBTQ+ community and its lived experiences.

The ReBus editorial team welcomes papers that address modern and contemporary gender issues through the analysis and interpretation of art. While we recognize that such inquiry might take a wide range of forms, we particularly encourage papers that engage with the social construct of gender, architectural feminism, and gender in space. To this end, we welcome all understandings of space, social media, newspapers, magazines, television, urban environments, exhibitions, and domestic spaces, as well as papers that address artifacts, visual culture, and material culture. Some possible topics might include the phenomenology of gendered bodies navigating built spaces, as well as related issues of reception, resistance, power, and rhetoric.

Please submit your abstract (250-500 words), including your institutional affiliation, by December 16th

Papers should be 8.000-10.000 words and they must be submitted by February 27th, 2023

Please submit your abstract and paper to ReBus editorial team rebusessex.ac.uk, with the subject “Abstract: Gender, Society, and Art.”
