Call for papers for the 64th issue:
Returning to the Past: Reception of Greek and Roman Antiquity in European Art from the Renaissance to the 19th Century

We would like to kindly invite you to submit papers to the 64th volume of “Quart” dedicated to the reception of Classical art in modern Europe.
Greek and Roman antiquity has proved an unfailing source of inspiration throughout the history of modern European art, providing artists with a wealth of themes from its artistic legacy, mythology and literary tradition. The interpretation of elements of ancient Greek and Roman culture through art reflects the specific historical, cultural and social context in which they have taken place. Thus these mechanisms enable us to decipher a particular relationships between the audience, their times and Greek and Roman antiquity. During a period extending from the Renaissance through to the Enlightenment, Graeco-Roman themes had played a decisive role in the formation of modern European art. However, the advent of Romanticism vitally reformulate the classical legacy. The beginning of the 19th century marked a new phase in European perceptions of Classical antiquity and a turn towards ancient Greece, shaped by a number of historical, ideological and artistic factors, such as: the Greek struggle for independence, developments in classical archaeology and the growing philhellenism arising from Winckelman's idea of the absolute superiority of Greek art.

The contributions should then address modern works of art that incorporate classical subject matter: monuments and implementations that are characteristic, outstanding, but also unknown, forgotten and located in poorly explored areas, whose analysis will reveal previously unknown aspects of the trend under discussion.

Deadline for submission of papers: 22 April 2022
The issue will be published in the 2nd half of June 2022.
