Theory and Landscape (Barcelona, 25-26 Feb 10)

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR

THEORY AND LANDSCAPE: INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES

Barcelona, 25th and 26th of February 2010

The aim of this seminar is to bring together experts and scholars from
different disciplines and professional backgrounds - from aesthetics and art
history to landscape architecture, urban planning and geography. "Landscape"
is here considered as an interdisciplinary category that cannot be reduced
to the theoretical and epistemological framework of one particular
discipline. Its meanings and the analysis of it benefit from the hybridizing
space of the plural discourses of different disciplines and social or
political practices.

The seminar will raise issues such as:

- the epistemological and methodological debate on the concept of landscape
and its theoretical and material applications,

- the discussion of the research on the idea and the representations of
landscape, in particular those generated during the last two decades, for
example: emotional landscapes, experiential landscapes, landscapes as
projects and as processes

- the suitability of the interdisciplinary approach in the development of
those new ways of thinking and interpreting the notion of landscape,

- the inflation of the use of landscape in contemporary discourses and the
trivialization of its meaning and content,

- the place of landscape in contemporary artistic discourses and in art
production
