htc.Workshop (Miami Beach, 4-5 Feb 10)

David Rifkind

htc.Workshop
The Wolfsonian-FIU
Miami Beach, FL

Please join us for the fourth htc.Workshop Thursday and Friday, February
4 and 5.

The htc.Workshop provides a forum for new research in architectural
history, theory and criticism through semi-annual symposia co-hosted by
the Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture + The Arts
at Florida International University, and by The Wolfsonian-FIU. Emerging
scholars discuss their work with peers and senior scholars representing
a number of disciplines in order to work through difficult material in a
collegial setting. Consistent with the international focus of FIU and
the Department of Architecture, the htc.Workshop places special emphasis
on contemporary research examining architecture in Latin America and the
Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.

The spring 2010 event will be held at The Wolfsonian-FIU, 1001
Washington Avenue, Miami Beach.

Thursday, February 4, at 7pm, the htc.Workshop will open with a keynote
lecture by Ken Tadashi Oshima, University of Washington, whose talk,
In-Between Space, will examine the development of modern architecture in
Japan within an international context.

The workshop portion will be held Friday, February 5, 10am – 1pm, and
will be moderated by Flaminia Gennari, Deputy Director for Collections
and Curatorial Affairs at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The workshop will
feature three papers:

Kai Gutschow, Carnegie Mellon University
Ernst May and Tropical Modernism

June Komisar, Ryerson University
Collaboration, Creativity, and the Crown: Architecture in Ouro Preto, Brazil

Kimberly Elman Zarecor, Iowa State University
What Became of Baa’s Garden City: Zlín in the Communist Years

Professor Zarecor’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Miami-Florida
European Union Center of Excellence.

The event is free and open to the public. Contact the event organizer,
