Im neu eingerichteten ProDoc „Sites of Mediation – Europäische Verflechtungsgeschichte. 1350–1650“ (geleitet von Prof. Susanna Burghartz, Universität Basel; Prof. Lucas Burkart, Universität Luzern; und Prof. Christine Göttler, Universität Bern) ist zum 15. Mai 2012 erneut ein Promotionsstipendium für drei Jahre im Bereich Kunstgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit zu besetzen.

Das Forschungsmodul „Erfinder neuer Dinge“ nimmt im Sinne der ‚connected history’ Impulse der aktuellen Kunst- und Wissensgeschichte auf und eröffnet durch den Fokus auf die Spanischen Niederlande und niederländischen Communities in Rom und Neapel neue Forschungsperspektiven. „Erfinder neuer Dinge“ untersucht spezifische Formen der Kunstproduktion und künstlerischen Virtuosität, wie sie in Interaktion mit unterschiedlichen materiellen, visuellen und wissenschaftlichen Kulturen und im Spannungsfeld von Fremd- und Selbstzuschreibung mit dem niederländischen Künstler-Habitus und Künstlertemperament assoziiert wurden.

Gefördert werden innovative Dissertationsprojekte, die sich mit unterschiedlichen Aspekten der Kunst und visuellen Kultur Antwerpens und der Spanischen Niederlande und ihrer Verbindungen zu anderen Wissensformen und Wissenskulturen beschäftigen.

Voraussetzungen sind ausreichende Kenntnisse der niederländischen Sprache und die Bereitschaft, sich mit der aktuellen historischen und kunsthistorischen Theoriediskussion auseinanderzusetzen. Projektsprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch.

Das Stipendium entspricht einer 100%-Doktorandenanstellung; das Gehalt richtet sich nach den Ansätzen des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds.

Announcement for one three-year doctoral position in the research module “‘Inventors of New Things’: Entangled Histories of Art in Early Modern Antwerp”, starting May 15, 2012

One fully-funded doctoral position is available as part of the PhD program “Sites of Mediation” jointly directed by Prof. Susanna Burghartz (University of Basel), Prof. Lucas Burkart (University of Lucerne), and Prof. Christine Göttler (University of Bern). The aim of the program is to investigate specific fields of cultural tension in early modern and Renaissance Europe, from the angle of ‘connected’ or ‘shared’ histories.

Taking up recent impulses in the History of Art and the History of Knowledge, the research module “Inventors of New Things” investigates forms of artistic production generally associated with the “Flemish manner”. Attempts made by Antwerp or Flemish artists, art collectors and patrons of the arts to create local cultural identities that differed from the dominant Italian model have so far not been fully explored. We are particularly interested in projects that study visual and performative media – paintings, drawings, prints, processions, rituals, and masquerades – as modes of cultural self-fashioning and self-representation.

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a M.A. in Art History or a related field as well as sufficient (reading) knowledge of Dutch. Project languages are English and German. We are especially seeking applications from candidates focusing on cross-disciplinary topics and with an interest in recent theoretical developments in the fields of Art History and History.

The doctoral fellowship is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
