ASSISTANT KEEPER FOR THE JAPANESE COLLECTIONS
The Japanese collections at the Ashmolean Museum are some of the most
important in the UK. Strongest in the decorative arts, with outstanding
ceramics and lacquer, the collections also include paintings (mostly of
the Shijo and Nanga schools), screens, woodblock prints, sword furniture
and archaeological material.
This post includes curatorial and research work, as well as the
possibility of teaching within the University. Equally importantly, the
curator will be responsible for the new Japanese gallery in the Museum¹s
imminent major redevelopment plan, and will work closely with colleagues
as part of this exciting project.
Proven expertise in Japanese art history and language are essential for
this post, as is enthusiasm and motivation, the ability to work as part
of a team and to plan and deliver work and projects to budget and
schedule. Experience of museum and exhibition work, lecturing and public
speaking are desirable, as is a publishing record and experience of
computerised databases and staff management.
The appointment is at Assistant Keeper level, salary range from GBP
23,643 - GBP 38,200 dependant upon qualification and experience.
