Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

wir möchten Ihnen nachstehend einen Aufruf der H-Net-Präsidentin Marylin
Levine zur Unterstützung unserer Dachorganisation ans Herz legen, sowie die
diesen Appell unterstreichenden und ergänzenden Ausführungen von Karsten
Borgmann (Redakteur H-Soz-u-Kult; Mitglied des H-Net Council).

H-ArtHist verdankt der technischen Infrastuktur des H-Net und der
unermüdlichen Unterstützung durch ein Team großenteils ehrenamtlicher
Mitarbeiter und Administratoren nichts weniger als seine Existenz. Daß diese
Organsisation sich - nicht zuletzt aufgrund ihres anhaltenden Erfolges und
Mitgliederzuwachses - darum bemüht, neue Finanzierungswege zu erschließen, die
ihre Leistungsfähigkeit und Unabhängigkeit auch künftig sicherstellen sollen,
können wir nur nachdrücklich begrüßen.

1) Karsten Borgmann:

H-Net und die Michigan State University haben seit einem
Jahrzehnt Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern in aller
Welt eine einzigartige Infrastruktur zum Betrieb von
akademischen Mailinglisten und Webangeboten zur Verfügung
gestellt. Über 140 verschiedene Projekte - und nicht zuletzt
H-ArtHist - machen von diesem Angebot Gebrauch. Die einzige
Voraussetzung für den Start eines neuen Netzwerks ist nach wie
vor, dass dabei die Standards eines fairen akademischen
Umgangs Beachtung finden, deren internationale Verbreitung H-
Nets wichtigstes Ziel ist. Darüber hinaus sind H-Nets
administrative und technische Angebote für alle, die sie in
Anspruch nehmen möchten, kostenlos.

Um diesen Service aufrechterhalten zu können bitten wir Sie um
Ihre Unterstützung. Bereits vor längerer Zeit hat die Michigan
State University, die bislang die laufenden Kosten des
Projekts H-Net deckte, angekündigt, nur noch einen Teil dieser
Finanzierung zu übernehmen. H-Net hat die Auflage bekommen,
finanziell selbständiger und unabhängiger zu werden. Der
bislang recht lose Verbund hat sich deshalb als gemeinnützige
NGO nach amerikanischem Recht gegründet. Diese Organisation
und ihre Ziele können Sie, die Leserinnen und Leser von H-Soz-
u-Kult, auf verschiedene Art unterstützen:

Angesichts einer stets aggressiver werdenden kommerziellen und
politischen Vereinahmung öffentlicher Kommunikation wird die
Aufrechterhaltung von unabhängigen Kanälen für intellektuellen
Austausch immer wichtiger. Diese Aufgabe sollte auch,
zumindest teilweise, durch die Gemeinschaft der Nutzerinnen
und Nutzer übernommen werden. Deshalb bittet die H-Soz-u-Kult
Redaktion heute, und auch zukünftig, um Ihre Unterstützung für

Dear H-NET readers:

I am writing you in my capacity as President of H-NET to call your
attention to an important campaign H-NET will be launching to raise
funds for support of its operations and for new services.

H-NET has always been and always will be free to its readers. And
H-NET has never before sought direct funding support of any kind from
its readers. But that moment has come, and I hope you will take a
moment to consider H-NET's benefit to you and your colleagues and join
us in this very important effort.

You probably know that H-NET is the largest scholarly society dedicated
to using new media for scholarship. During an era where education
around the world is not in a position of its previous esteem, H-NET has
served both the academic world and the broader community. Together as
editors and subscribers we have connected new audiences, new fields,
new disciplines, new content across the globe:

*How many of us have met a new colleague, learned of a new book, heard
of a new discipline, reached a new student or audience through H-NET?

*How many of us have announced or organized a conference panel,
connected to a new group of scholars to collaborate on a grant
proposal, or found a welcome place to stay at a remote location while
doing research, because of H-NET?

*How many of us have located a new employment opportunity, written a
full-length review that might have taken years to get into print,
joined a dialogue about a new work, or been saved tremendous amounts of
time and effort because of a resource we learned about through H-NET?

*How many of us have taken ideas, syllabi, book recommendations,
teaching strategies, or new content into our classrooms because of H-NET?

*How many of us have discovered a world of discourse about life and
letters far beyond the confines of our institutions, fields, countries,
or language, through H-NET?

The aggregate figures tell us that millions of people have realized
such benefits:

-Over 2.6 million viewers visit the H-NET Web site each month

-H-NET Discussion Networks have expanded by 50% in just 2 years to 140
and reach 150,000 subscribers.

-H-NET publishes over 1,900 in-depth book reviews each year.

-The Job Guide is one of the largest in the world and is heavily used
by academics at all levels.

-Our Announcements system distributes thousands of conference calls and
event notices every month.

All these benefits come at no cost to readers. As a nonprofit
scholarly society, we do not charge for access to the content that you
and our editors work so hard to contribute. We do not erase things, or
hide them from view. We have worked hard to invite, cultivate, train,
and introduce new scholars, teachers, students, and writers to their
profession by training editors, recruiting advisory boards, and running
networks that welcome any sincere contributor. As mentioned above,
H-NET has become a vital component of the scholarly communications
system, linking scholars and teachers across disciplines, fields, and
nations.

The H-NET Council has approved a plan to create new, powerful tools and
services for subscribers and editors. These will include interactive
databases for storage and retrieval of dynamic, complex multimedia
objects as the foundation of a new content management system. It will
enable us to serve e-prints, images, sound, and text gatekept by
editors and available to subscribers for teaching and scholarship. We
also need to modernize our editing and dissemination systems, so that
editors can use safer and easier tools for managing their list mail,
and you will be able to use better and more precise searching
capabilities across our web and lists.

In an age when support for scholarship is shrinking, H-NET has been a
society that has expanded its capabilities for the entire community.
This is why we need your assistance. We have created two new ways for
you to help us fund these exciting developments:

-- Buy-through links to popular online book vendors is now available at
each of our reviews. Any purchases that originate with these links
will earn royalties for H-NET.

Next Wednesday, March 31, will be SUPPORT H-NET Day. We are asking our
editors to devote the day's messages to discussions about H-NET and its
contributions to your working lives and professional development. The
Officers and Council of H-NET are very interested in your stories and
ideas. In an age where education often is derided, let's celebrate
some of the best things we do!

Finally, we also are seeking your financial assistance as well as your
moral support. More information about funding levels will be
distributed, but on behalf of the H-NET Editors, Officers and Council
members, I'd like to urge you - our readers - to join us and support
H-NET yourselves, with a donation. If everyone makes a donation, - at
whatever level it will go a long way towards ensuring the success of
our mutual endeavors.

Please support H-NET, so that we can continue the work that we all know
needs to be done!
