Doctoral Position at the Institute of Landscape Architecture, ETH Zurich

Project: «Industrialization in the Alps: Landscape, Architecture, Art, and Work»
Subproject B: «temporary workers settlements in the Alps»

For the research project "Industrialization in the Alps: Landscape, Architecture, Art and Work", which is financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation, we are offering a post for a PhD student. The project deals with the industry in the Alps since the second half of the 19th century with a focus on a changing landscape, society and culture. The aim is that a revised view of the Alps as an industrialized space not only gives us a different perception of the landscape, but also reveals the manifold links with the non-alpine region, which is, for example, labor migration, raw material production or global material shifts. We are looking for a person with a Master / Diploma in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Art History or related subjects, who has a high level of interest and above-average motivation for scientific work and wants to address one or more of the following questions: How has the alpine landscape changed in connection with infrastructure projects (e.g. in connection with energy, transport or trade)? How were and are material movements (natural or man-made) being handled? Of particular interest to the research project are proposals that deal with the issue of temporary settlements in the alpine area, in the context of large-scale construction projects and which were and are mostly inhabited by migrants. Due to the topic perimeter, very good language skills in German, French or Italian are required. The candidate should apply with a project outline containing an independent proposal to one of the above questions or topics.

We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents:
- letter of motivation
- project proposal
- CV
