Leiden University, Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS), is looking for a:

University Lecturer (UD) Decorative Arts (0,5 fte)

Key responsibilities:
– Teaching in the history and theory of the decorative arts (and related fields as ‘domestic culture’ (wooncultuur) and design) on all levels and in all types of education (including supervising internships and excursions), esp. in the BA track ‘Kunst & Cultuur’ and in the BA track ‘Arts, Media and Society’
– Supervising BA and MA theses, both in Dutch and English
– Teaching academic skills specifically needed for Art History on the BA and MA level
– Participating in the development and implementation of education innovations – also in digital form – for the Art History program
– Playing an active role in recruiting Dutch and international students by contributing to open days, orientation and information sessions
– Maintaining the established contacts with museums and collections relevant to the field
– Contributing to administrative and management duties within the program and LUCAS
– Supervising PhD candidates
– Doing research in the field of the decorative arts within one of the research programmes of LUCAS
– Acquisition of project funding at the national, European and international level (NWO, Horizon 2020 etc.)

Your profile:
– A PhD-degree in the study of the decorative arts (or related fields such as ‘domestic culture’ (wooncultuur) or design) and an awareness of current viewpoints as well as innovative methods within the field. Demonstrable knowledge of the history of the decorative arts and its role in societies from the Middle Ages until the present
– Research profile that fits within LUCAS: https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/humanities/centre-for-the-arts-in-society/research.
– Demonstrable and outstanding teaching skills (demonstrated by teaching evaluations, BKO-registration, etc.) and experience with educational innovations
– Demonstrable experience with the application and acquisition of external project funding
– Excellent command, both active and passive, of the English and Dutch language. If the candidate does not command Dutch, she/he will be given one year to acquire the necessary proficiency to teach and to be able to supervise students in Dutch (papers and exams)

The Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS; https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/humanities/centre-for-the-arts-in-society) is one of the seven Research Institutes of the Faculty of Humanities. It aims to be a prominent player in the research field of the arts (literature, art, architecture, media and design).

Leiden University offers two BA tracks in Art History, the Dutch track ‘Kunst en Cultuur’ and the English track ‘Arts, Media and Society’, as well as the English Ma track ‘Arts and Culture’. Our Ba tracks and our Ma track offer students a rich transmedial and global perspective on art and architecture in which the decorative arts play an important role and are not studied in isolation, but studied in an interdisciplinary way.

We offer:
Initially the employee will receive a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.
Salary range from € 3,427.- to € 4,691,- gross per month for a fulltime appointment depending on prior education and working experience (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
