Begleitend zur Ausstellung „Künstler Komplex. Fotografische Porträts von Baselitz bis Warhol. Sammlung Platen“ untersucht das Symposium fotografische Künstlerporträts des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Leitbegriff „Künstler Komplex“ eröffnet neue theoretische Fragen an das Künstlerbildnis. Wir verstehen den psychologischen „Komplex“-Begriff als treibende Kraft, die unser Denken und Handeln bestimmt und im Moment der fotografischen Aufnahme in Erscheinung tritt. Dabei werden historisch wie kulturell konstruierte Vorstellungen des „Künstlers“ rezipiert und re-inszeniert.

Die Idee vom Künstler wird häufig mit Genialität, Originalität und Einfallsreichtum verbunden. Bedeutende Werke der Literatur und der Philosophie beschwören eine Analogie zwischen dem künstlerischen Schaffensprozess und der göttlichen Schöpfung herauf, wobei der Künstler zum gottgleichen Schöpfer ernannt wird. In diesem Zusammenhang lässt sich beobachten, dass solche Vorstellungen häufig von männlichen Künstlern ausgehen. Die Ausstellung „Künstler Komplex“ umfasst den Facettenreichtum eines Künstlerbegriffs, der sich über die Ideengeschichte bis hinein ins 20. Jahrhundert ausdifferenzierte und im fotografischen Bild konkretisierte.

Das Symposium soll Arbeiten von Fotografinnen, Selbstporträts, experimentelle Aufnahmen, transvestitische Bildnisse und Karikaturen ins Zentrum der Analyse rücken und (auto-)biografische Darstellungen sowie Künstler-Metaphern aus Manifesten, literarischen Quellen und aus der Ideengeschichte in die Diskussion einbeziehen. Wir freuen uns auf Bewerbungen, die das Künstlerbildnis in der Fotografie aus europäischer wie globaler Perspektive in den Mittelpunkt der Forschung stellen und dabei foto- und kunsthistorische, ideengeschichtliche, psychologische und philologische Ansätze verbinden. Die Bewerbung sollte ein Abstract (max. 250 Wörter) in deutscher oder englischer Sprache sowie eine kurze Biografie, ggf. mit der Angabe der institutionellen Zugehörigkeit der Bewerber*innen enthalten und uns spätestens bis zum 30. Die Länge der Vorträge sollte 30 Minuten nicht überschreiten; die Vorträge können auf Deutsch oder Englisch gehalten werden.

Artist Complex. Images of Artists in Photography

Accompanying the exhibition “Artist Complex. Photographic Portraits from Baselitz to Warhol. Platen Collection”, the symposium analyzes photographic portraits of artists in the twentieth century. Under the umbrella term of an “artist complex” we hope to develop new theoretical approaches to portraits of artists. We understand the psychological term of the “complex” as a central driving force, which determines our thoughts and actions, and which at the same time materializes in the moment of the photographic exposure. In this sense, the “artist complex” replicates and re-stages historically and culturally constructed ideas of an “artist”.

The notion of the artist is often associated with ingenuity, originality and creativity. Central works of literature and philosophy evoke an analogy between the artist’s creative process and divine creation, making the artist a godlike creator. In this context, it becomes clear that such conceptions often address a male artist. The exhibition “Artist Complex” embraces the idea of the artist in all its facets as it became differentiated in the History of Ideas over the centuries and as it was depicted in photography in the twentieth century.

The symposium focuses on works of female photographers, self portraits, experimental works, portraits of cross-dressed individuals and caricatures and refers to (auto-)biographical descriptions as well as metaphors of artists from manifestos, literary sources and from the History of Ideas.

We invite proposals, which focus on images of artists in photography, in a European as well as in a global perspective, and which combine approaches from Art History, History of Photography, History of Ideas, Psychology and Philology. The application should include an abstract of max. 250 words together with the applicant’s short bio and (if applicable) the professional affiliation. Proposals are due by July 30th 2018.
