CALL FOR PROPOSALS

In 2018, ASAP/10 celebrates the 10th Anniversary of ASAP and acknowledges the tricentennial of the colonial founding of New Orleans, our host city. ASAP/10 invites proposals from scholars, artists, and other practitioners addressing the contemporary arts since the 1960s in all their forms—literary, visual, performing, musical, cinematic, design, and digital. We are interested in work across disciplines and media that examines the formal, cultural, social, and political dimensions of the arts today.
Especially welcome are proposals assessing the current place and past legacies of New Orleans (e.g., improvisation, creolization, migration, tourism), the Southern United States, and the Global South.

Participants are encouraged to think as broadly and imaginatively as possible about the intersections between and among the contemporary arts and their institutions, economies, policies, and traditions. Proposals may focus on individual artists, writers, designers, composers, or performers; they may consider artistic movements, collectives, and local scenes, including those online or underground; they may discuss any theoretical, intellectual, or aesthetic formation that figures in the world of the arts as we know them now.

The questions below are reflective of ASAP/10’s methodology and scope, but topics beyond these questions are welcome.

What roles can we imagine for the arts in relation to the great social, political, and ecological crises of our times?
How do conditions of individualism and collaboration inform contemporary artistic practice and its dissemination and reception?
How can an understanding of place, as cultivated by works of art, deepen our ability to engage in democracy and to imagine our collective destiny?
How can artworks facilitate an experience of time, time travel, or the performance of timelessness/timefullness?
What can artists, activists, and scholars do to sustain and support the work of decolonization, anti-oppression, and liberation movements?
In times of great uncertainty, what are the roles of improvisation, spontaneity, carelessness, randomness, and innovation in the arts?
What is the role of collage, bricolage, fragmentation, or the piecemeal in defining or understanding contemporary art?
What roles can we imagine for contemporary art that support or challenge our perspectives and understandings of archetypes, stereotypes, and the fullness of the human condition?

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
SESSION FORMATS:
We encourage creative and alternative presentational styles, alongside traditional papers and panels. Seminars, workshops, panel debates, artist discussions, films, installations, visual displays, and other session types will be welcomed.
Proposed panels, roundtables, and seminars should include speakers from more than one institution. Advanced graduate students are welcomed, but sessions comprised entirely of graduate students are unlikely to be accepted. Participants may only appear in the program twice.
Seminars normally meet for a single session, and papers are circulated among participants in advance of the conference. Seminar leaders are asked to designate whether or not the session is open to conference attendees or limited to seminar participants and should make appropriate arrangements to incorporate an audience if the seminar is open.
PROPOSALS SHOULD INCLUDE:
- 300-word abstracts for individual presentations within larger sessions
- 700-word abstracts for entire sessions (panels, roundtables, seminars)
- Each speaker’s bio (300 words max)

Seminar leaders are asked to propose topics by the CFP deadline of MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2018 and to submit the full roster of participants by MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2018.
