18th International Conference of the Association “Danses macabres d’Europe”

The Association “Danses macabres d’Europe” was founded in France in 1987. Over the years professors, curators, collectors and artists interested in Danses macabres (Dances of Death) have created study groups in Swit-zerland, Italy, Holland, Germany and Austria. Following in the tradition of previous conferences held in France (Chartres, Kientzheim, Vendôme, Rouen and Troyes), Switzerland (Ettiswyl and Lucerne), Italy (Clusone and Turin), Germany (Straubing, Füssen and Kassel), Belgium (Ghent), Austria (Metnitz), and Romania (Sibiu), the conference in Paris will serve as an important meeting-place for fruitful discussion among scholars coming from all over Europe.

Conference topics
Participants are invited to present a paper in the fields of art, history or literature on one of the following topics:
- Dance of Death in society and in towns
- Death and its sites of memory: tombs, cemeteries, chapels…
- The art of death and its conception of final happenings.

Submission
Paper proposals, consisting of a title and an abstract (about 250 words), must be submitted before the 1st March 2018 to danses.macabres.deuropeorange.fr.
After evaluation of the proposals by the scientific committee, responses will be sent out by the end of March 2018. The final version of the articles selected for presentation must be received before the 1st of September 2018, in view of publication at the time of the colloquium in March 2019. Each participant will receive a volume of the acts when the colloquium convenes.

French is the language of the conference but papers may also be delivered in German, English, Italian and Spanish.

Events
The conference will be accompanied by the exhibition « Le livre et la mort » (The Book and Death) presented at the Bibliothèque Mazarine (23 quai de Conti, 75006 Paris) and at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève (10 place du Panthéon, 75005 Paris); the opening will take place on the first day of the congress. Other exhibitions will show the works of modern artists. Arrangements will be made to visit the chapel of the Institut de France and the cenotaph of Cardinal Mazarin, the Pantheon, the Catacombs and Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Conference sites
The conference will take place in Salle de lecture de la Bibliothèque Mazarine (23, quai de Conti 75006 Paris) et amphitheatre of the École du Louvre (Palais du Louvre, Place du Carrou-sel, Porte Jaujard, 75001 Paris).
