Documentary Aesthetics: New Questions of Media and Truth

Interventions is the online journal of Columbia University's graduate program in Modern Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies. We are seeking submissions for our first printed issue, which will focus on documentary aesthetics in film and photography, as well as the problems related to the exhibition of works of art as documentation.
We encourage submissions - in the form of artist projects or essays - that approach this topic across artistic, critical, and curatorial frameworks.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to):

Documentary film practices and photography:
- Examples include: cinéma vérité, kino eye, digital video and pictorialism in documentary photography

Archival practices:
- Archiving as an artistic practice
- Artists who work with archives or interact with them in their work
- The creation or exhibition of archives by art historians and curators

Art as documentation of social reality:
- What does it mean when an artist enters social reality to generate work?
- The exhibition of documents from or of historical events
- The relationship between image and text/caption

The relationship between fiction and truth:
- Artists who build work from a fictional narrative
- Fiction experienced as fact: spectatorial issues of trust, bias, and deceit
- Manipulation of photographic documents: trick photography, spirit photography, doctored images

To submit content, please email full text articles as well as an abstract of 300 words, and a bio of no more than 100 words, to moda.interventionsgmail.com by Monday, March 16, 2015. The selection of article will be communicated by March 23. Full texts must not exceed 4,000 words and should follow Chicago Style. Images should be 400 x 600 pixels, 72 dpi, and saved as a .jpg or .gif. Contributors are responsible for copyediting their texts prior to final submission and for attaining rights to all images provided for publication.
Interventions Journal is a curatorial platform featuring essays, interviews, art projects, and experimental investigations of the implicit cross-sections between these practices. Flexible in format, the project aims to cultivate dialogue amongst a diverse body of participants including curators, artists, and art and architectural historians in order to establish a common space and archive of exchange.

Launched in 2011 within Columbia University's graduate program in Modern Art: Critical & Curatorial Studies (MODA) by Ceren Erdem, Jaime Schwartz, and Lisa Hayes Williams, Interventions is currently edited by Béatrice Grenier and Anna Linehan.
