Genius Loci - Sensibilia. Colloquium on Perception and Experience 2015

Genius Loci

“Genius Loci" is not just the name of a problem faced by scholars of antiquity nor an archaism object of scholarly analysis fatally devoid of any relevance. Philosophy of time, history, anthropology, psychology, architecture, ecology and history of art (the list could be much larger) dedicated important studies to the idea that places are dwelled – or maybe determined – by powers, which “magnetically” attract or even grasp humans attention, dominate their impulses, determine their mood and perhaps influence their thoughts. Art itself, in its various forms, as well as Literature, finds one of their distinctive features in recording and adequately expressing the power of a certain place.

Everyday experience always attests and even admits that the relationship between man and space cannot be neutral. What humans feel and think mostly seems to be inspired by the portion of lived space in which they feel and think, by the expressive and atmospheric qualities (smells, lights, colors, sounds, shapes, etc.) that belong to a place. One can also say that what has been usually called "the soul of a place" is in a sense what supervenes upon all the elements (including materials) that make up a place as a new partially independent character not entirely reducible to them. However, can that actually be considered true? Is “Genius loci” something that is in a certain place, or is it just the outcome of our projective faculties (e.g. empathy) on the outer space? In addition, if genius loci was not something that depends on us, does every place have its own "genius", or only certain precise loca are characterized by a genius?

However, the idea of the “genius of the place” seems to be a possible response to the problem of the character of a certain portion of external space and, at the same time, a reply to any theoretical positions that make places anonymous and without any expressive value (somebody speaks of “non-places”). The ninth edition of Sensibilia – Colloquium on Perception and Experience, which will take place over the course of 2015, aims to deploy the multiple dimensions of meaning beard by the phrase "genius loci", through an interdisciplinary investigation (philosophy, aesthetics, art history, urban planning, sociology, linguistics, economics, psychology, semiotics, geography, literature, etc.). The board will select the papers on the basis of an abstract (max. 1000 characters) on the problem of “genius loci” to be sent to info.sensibiliagmail.com by January 25, 2014. Three papers will be admitted.

The results of the selection will be communicated by January 31, 2015 via e-mail and published on the website www.sensibilia.it. The selected candidates will be then contacted to arrange a date for their talk, which should take place between October and December 2015. Speakers will be responsible for their own travel expenses, while the committee of Sensibilia is responsible for the publication expenses.

Sensibilia is an annual colloquium promoted by the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (under the direction of Prof. Tonino Griffero) and sponsored by several cultural and scientific institutions. The project, started in 2007, is devoted to foster multidisciplinary dialogue and debate on subjects mainly related to perception, the senses, phenomenology of experience, images, body and the like, with the aim to connect different domains - such as philosophy, psychology, natural sciences - under the perspective of a broadly inclusive theory of aisthesis: a science of sensibilia.

Sensibilia is structured on a series of coordinated conferences, to be held in roman cultural institutions, that every year, according to a scheduled calendar, tackle a different general theme, chosen by the advisory board, with the participation of Italian and international scholars from different academic and disciplinary fields, but actively interested in the topic. One or more papers (by one or more authors), previously submitted, are given in each conference and are conceived knowingly to be open to a wide critical debate and assessment by discussers and the participants in the seminar.
