Musei e contesti

Editorial series "Le età del Museo"
Eingabeschluss : 15.05.2024

Caterina Paparello

Edited by Ginevra Bentivoglio Editoria from 2024, this initiative is designed to delve into the critical historiography of museums and their evolution. It offers insights into the history of collecting and the contemporary international debate, ranging from audience analysis to reflections on the mission and social role of the museum institution. Scheduled on an annual basis, under the double guideline of collective volumes and monographic studies, this series aims to be a wide-open space for the frontiers of research, such as the representation of women in exhibition or decision-making paths, the critical evaluation of the application of international orientations to the Italian museum, adding to this the unavoidable relationship with the territory and the theoretical and critical evolutions introduced by the dialogue between permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Series directed by

Marking the establishment of the new editorial series “The Ages of the Museum”, which aims to investigate and develop themes of critical historiography on the museum, from collecting to the evolution of its form, from contemporary international debate to reflections on the role of the museum institution in society, this Call for Chapters wants to collect contributions for the first issue entitled Musei e contesti. Open to scholars in museology and the history of collections, whether in training (Ph.D., Post-Docs) or already affirmed in the field of study; the call intends to generate interdisciplinary dialogue on the following topics and themes for critical reflection on the museum:

- Historicized displays and re-installations, also with a perspective of the necessary turnover of collections
- Relationships among exhibitions, museums, art historiography, and forms of reception
- The contribution of private collecting to historiography and criticism
- Spaces of intersection among museums, press, critics, and media
- The gaze of the public
- Museum professions
