Picturing the North – Nationale Identität und Deutsch-Skandinavischer Kulturaustausch im 19. Jahrhundert
//
Picturing the North – National Identity and German-Scandinavian Cultural Exchange in the 19th Century

Jahrhundert.

Picturing the North – National Identity and German-Scandinavian Cultural Exchange in the 19th Century

One can say that in the field of arts, the development of peculiar national identities unfolds within a continuous process of perceptions of the self and the other. In the case of the Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden, it was particularly Germany which provided the cultural frame of reference in this process taking place in the 19th century – a reciprocal process not only sustained by the many Scandinavian artists whom felt drawn to Germany’s contemporary cultural centres in Dresden or Munich, but also by a continuously growing interest into the Scandinavian countries amongst the German cultural elite.
It was not before the end of the 18th century that the meaning of the “the North” as a topic of artistic and literary production – until then considered as something wild and dangerous – started to receive a more positive connotation influenced by Rousseauean thought, particular his philosophy of nature. One might thus argue that the construction of national identity in Scandinavia evolved not only in the context of developments in Germany, but also within the dialectic of the construction of a peculiar national cultural identity in each Scandinavian country and the emergence of an overarching idea of “the North”.
At this colloquium, scholars from the USA, Scandinavia and Germany will discuss the oeuvre of artists and intellectuals within the context of the ideological, artistic, and political reciprocities between Germany and the Scandinavian countries in the 19th century from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective.
The participation is free of charge. Please send your registration to nordenzikg.eu
