VENEZIA ARTI | Journal of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage
Venezia Arti is the annual journal of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice undergoing blind peer review and published both in print and digital copy (open access) by Edizioni Ca’ Foscari. Founded in 1987 by Giuseppe Mazzariol and Wladimiro Dorigo as the bulletin of the then Department of art history and critics, after almost 30 years of activity the journal has strengthened its scientific role and gained much appraisal at international level. The journal welcomes scholars of all disciplines surrounding the arts and fosters an interdisciplinary approach capable of analysing systemic developments and critical issues in artistic culture.

CALL FOR ARTICLES 2017 | The artist’s signature. Authorship, self-consciousness, identity and memory of the artists
Venezia Arti is looking for contributors to its 2017 issue entitled Authorship, self-consciousness, identity and memory of the artists and curated by Giovanni Maria Fara, Stefano Riccioni and Nico Stringa. Following is a description of the theme, which should help interested scholars to focus their abstract proposal.

TITLE: The artist’s signature. Authorship, self-consciousness, identity and memory of the artists

THEME AND QUERIES: The next issue of “Venezia Arti” focuses on artist’s signature from Middle Ages to Contemporary Art. "Artist’s signature" is intended a written evidence, physically included within the art work. It contains, isolated or placed in any textual context, the name (or memory) of those who meant to be recorded as responsible for carrying out the work. Not only, then, subscriptions or attributive inscriptions, but all those written evidences that could be better defined as "memories of artists" (Donato 2013).
If properly questioned, every "inscription-signature" to be found in any sort of monument and artifact provides an abundance of first-hand data on working methods, artist’s condition and culture, relationships with patrons and public. Moreover, they offer an extensive documentation on artistic lexicon, rarely available in traditional written sources.
This monographic issue welcomes contributions willing to enrich the debate on authorship in all its different aspects. Contributions that highlight the role of self-consciousness and, thus, discuss artist’s willingness to achieve a public and durable fame are encouraged. Very welcomed are also contributions dealing with different levels of literacy of young and old masters, discussing the topic on the ground of the analysis of linguistic and graphic variants within their signatures.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION | Instructions and information
If you are interested, please write an abstract of no more than 3000 characters (spaces included) together with a short biographical note and the provisional title. All materials should be sent by February 28, 2017 via email (subject: “Venezia Arti 2017 – Call for Articles”) to the curators at the following addresses: giovannimaria.faraunive.it, stefano.riccioniunive.it and stringaunive.it. Notice of selection will be given to authors within March 30, 2017.
Finalised articles should not exceed 30.000 characters (spaces included, plus notes and bibliography) and will undergo blind peer review. Accepted languages are Italian, English and French, though all texts must have an English abstract and stick to the editorial guidelines of Edizioni Ca’ Foscari. Texts that shouldn’t comply with editorial guidelines won’t be accepted. Please note that the author must secure all copyright permissions for images and that all image reproduction costs are also borne by the author. The deadline for all articles accepted is June 30, 2017.

Venezia Arti è la rivista annuale di storia della arti del Dipartimento di Filosofia e Beni Culturali dell’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, soggetta a blind peer review e realizzata sia in stampa che in digitale (open access) dalle Edizioni Ca’ Foscari. Fondata nel 1987 da Giuseppe Mazzariol e Wladimiro Dorigo come bollettino dell’allora Dipartimento di Storia e critica delle arti, dopo quasi trent’anni ha mantenuto e consolidato il suo ruolo raccogliendo un vasto consenso nel mondo scientifico internazionale. La rivista è aperta a studiosi di tutti i settori delle arti e incoraggia una visione di tipo interdisciplinare, capace di documentare con sistematicità critica avvenimenti e problemi nella cultura artistica.

Autorialità, autocoscienza, identità e memoria degli artisti, curato da Giovanni Maria Fara, Stefano Riccioni e Nico Stringa. Segue una descrizione del tema per orientare i contributi degli studiosi che desiderino inviare una proposta.

TITOLO: La “firma” nell’arte. Autorialità, autocoscienza, identità e memoria degli artisti

TEMA E PROBLEMATICHE: Il prossimo numero di «Venezia Arti» si propone di affrontare il tema della firma d’artista dal Medioevo all’età contemporanea. Per ‘firma d’artista’ s’intende un attestato scritto, fisicamente allegato all’opera, che conservi, isolato o inserito entro qualsiasi contesto testuale, il nome (o comunque la memoria) di chi s’intende presentare come responsabile della realizzazione: non solo, dunque, sottoscrizioni o iscrizioni attributive, ma quelle che sembrano meglio e più latamente definibili come “memorie d’artisti” (Donato 2013).
Le iscrizioni-firma su monumenti e manufatti d’ogni classe e livello forniscono, se opportunamente interrogate, una messe di dati di prima mano sui modi di lavoro, la condizione, la cultura degli artisti, il rapporto con la committenza e il pubblico, e un’ampia documentazione sul lessico artistico, raramente disponibile nelle fonti scritte tradizionali.
Il numero monografico della rivista accoglierà contributi che sollecitino a riflettere su questi problemi dell’autografia. Accoglierà pertanto contributi che invitino inoltre a ragionare sul ruolo dell’autocoscienza e, quindi, sulle aspirazioni ad una pubblica e duratura fama degli artisti in quanto tali. Saranno accolti anche contributi che indaghino i diversi livelli di alfabetizzazione di maestri grandi e piccoli, anche attraverso l’esame delle varianti formali (linguistiche e grafiche) delle iscrizioni-firma.

Per proporre un contributo si prega di inviare il titolo provvisorio e un abstract di max. 3.000 battute (spazi inclusi) con una breve nota biografica. I materiali vanno inviati entro il 28 febbraio 2017 ai curatori del numero agli indirizzi giovannimaria.faraunive.it, stefano.riccioniunive.it e stringaunive.it con oggetto della mail “Venezia Arti 2017 – Call for Articles”. Gli autori degli abstract selezionati saranno contattati entro il 30 marzo 2017. Gli articoli definitivi non devono superare le 30.000 battute (spazi inclusi, escluse note e bibliografia) e sono soggetti a blind peer review. Le lingue accettate sono italiano, inglese e francese. Indipendentemente dalla lingua di redazione, tutti gli articoli devono prevedere l’abstract in lingua inglese e rispettare le norme editoriali delle Edizioni Ca’ Foscari. I testi difformi non saranno accettati. Gli autori devono provvedere autonomamente a costi e diritti di riproduzione di eventuali immagini, da fornire obbligatoriamente in alta definizione.
