Casting. Ein analoger Weg ins Zeitalter der Digitalisierung?
Ein Symposium zur Gipsformerei der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin

26./27. November 2015, Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg, Remise

Casting. A way to embrace the digital age in analogue fashion?
A symposium on the Gipsformerei of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

26th/27th November 2015, Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg (Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection), Remise

The symposium will centre on the Gipsformerei (Replica Workshop), the oldest of the institutions forming part of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums of Berlin). Aside from its role as a manufactory it possesses a unique and encyclopaedic collection of approx. 7,000 moulds and models. The history of the Workshop, stretching back almost 200 years, many sections of which are still unexplored, is regarded by scholars of many disciplines – Visual Studies, Art History, Culture Studies, Media Studies and History - as being highly topical today.

By promoting exchanges of ideas between scholars, artists, IT-specialists and museum curators, the symposium aims to arrive at a new conceptualisation of a many-faceted institution that appears distinctly Janus-like in the 21st century. On the one hand the Gipsformerei is oriented towards the past, producing casts of historical artworks; on the other hand the founding idea of the Gipsformerei – to create, in plaster, “the world’s leading art collection in terms of comprehensive content and non-profit status”. At the same time it is precisely this backwards and forwards dualism that is posing new challenges for the institution today.

Against this backdrop, and due to the shifting boundaries between original and copy and the strengthening of new forms of referential, appropriating artistic processes, the outlook for research is promising. Special attention in this context should also be paid to the growing importance of the Gipsformerei as a three-dimensional ‘object memory’. We are in a position to conserve the conditions of objects that are no longer preserved in the original. New and urgent tasks are emerging in the face of the growing incidence of loss, destruction and damage of items as a result of theft, violence and environmental conditions. The Gipsformerei is likewise of great interest as a document of the history of science, and the question of the historical significance of the collection as a scientific instrument for a number of disciplines would make a promising area of study.

In addition, the symposium aims to explore and evaluate the history of the Berlin Replica Workshop in the 19th and 20th century, analysing the evolution of both workshop and collection in the tension between science and politics, and to study the transcultural and transnational arena in which the Gipsformerei operates. Another focus will be the future prospects of this unique casting collection in the interplay between analogue and digital mediums.

The symposium is designed to centre on the profile of the Gipsformerei as an institution of the Staatliche Museen and with it on the potential for further scientific research that has so far been less than comprehensive. Beyond its traditional focus on classical archaeology the Gipsformerei and its collection serve as a fascinating subject of investigation for historical research projects covering a number of disciplines, a subject of study that promises to deliver new insights within the context of current discussions regarding cultural heritage and notions of world heritage. We are thinking here of novel approaches that view cultural heritage as a bundle of relationships, as document and motor of the links or exchanges between cultures of the world.

Particularly now that, in an age of digitisation, the founding idea of the Gipsformerei seems to be becoming a reality whereas in the 19th century it was still utopian, special attention should be paid not only to its history, its historical role, its potential to stimulate the imagination of artists, scholars and the wider public but also to the discursive potential for differences of opinion relating to plaster casts in the museum environment.

Plaster cast collections have always represented, and remain, a fragile segment of cultural heritage – in both material and intangible terms. In the future the status and capacity for survival of analogue reproduction techniques and copies will depend not least on the extent to which we are able to open up prospects at the interface between analogue and digital mediums, both in new production and in our approach to and interaction with the historical material in collections, i.e. to develop forms of interplay that benefit and enlighten both sides.

Conference papers can be linked to the following themes:

1. The Gipsformerei of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin within the context of the history of European museums in the 19th and early 20th centuries
• as an instrument of the development of Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island) in the field of tension between the scientific and political communities within the context of Europe
• as a transcultural and transnational arena, particularly within the context of more recent notions of world heritage, for instance from the perspective of an “histoire croisée” (entangled history).

2. Importance and roles of the Gipsformerei collection
• as an ‘object memory’ and physical depository of art, world cultures and cultural knowledge, as an institution of formal and cultural appropriation and as a tool with which to determine quality, assess value and draw up the canon
• as a document of the history of science (in the present) and a scientific instrument for numerous cultural disciplines (in the past)
• as a place of inspiration for artists, scholars and the wider public
• within the context of the discursive potential for differences of opinion relating to plaster casts in the museum environment

3. Museums’ casting collections in the digital age
• Casting collections as fragile “cultural heritage”, both material and intangible
• Prospects for the future with regard to the production and treatment of plaster moulds and casts in the interplay between analogue and digital mediums
• Ideas and suggestions for scholars, researchers, teachers, curators, etc, in their work with casting collections.

Researchers and scholars, including young scholars, and artists, data processing professionals and museum curators are invited to submit an 1800-word abstract (duration: no more than 20 minutes) and a short CV in German or English. The organisers expect to be able to reimburse the travel costs of conference speakers. We will gladly respond to queries and suggestions; please do not hesitate to contact us at the address given below.

Please send your abstract to: forschungsmb.spk-berlin.de, to arrive no later than 30th June 2015.
