„HANS ARP AND THE US“
American Academy Berlin

The conference is organized by the Stiftung Arp e.V. Berlin/Rolandswerth in cooperation with the American Academy and the Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin.

After the Second World War the work of Hans Arp achieved widespread recognition. Above all, his works found resonance in museums and galleries in the United States and among American collectors. Leading American artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Donald Judd engaged intensively with Arp’s work. Nevertheless, art historians have not yet fully analyzed Arp’s influence on post-war American art or the significance of his relationships with collectors, patrons and artists. Furthermore, although his presence in American exhibitions, galleries and the art market profoundly shaped his reception, the artist’s strong presence in the American art world has received little attention. The conference wants to advance new scholarly approaches to the work of Hans Arp and to promote exchange between academics, curators and art market experts.

Das Werk von Hans Arp erfuhr in den USA insbesondere nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges weitreichende Anerkennung und Verbreitung in Museen, Galerie und bei Sammlern. Er hinterließ wichtige Spuren in den Werken vieler amerikanischer Künstler. Dennoch wurde Arps Einfluss auf die amerikanische Kunst der Nachkriegszeit, seine Kontakte zu Sammlern, Mäzenen und Künstlern bisher nicht hinreichend akademisch betrachtet. Ebenso wenig wurde seine Präsenz in Ausstellungen, Galerien und dem Kunstmarkt der USA diskutiert, durch welche die Rezeption seines Werkes bis heute maßgeblich bestimmt wird. Die Tagung setzt neue Impulse in der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk von Hans Arp. Zudem bietet sie Experten aus Wissenschaft, Museum und Kunstmarkt Möglichkeiten zum fundierten Austausch über diese für Hans Arp so wichtige Zeit.
