Art and Nature in the Early Modern Period
PhD Workshop with Professor Claire Farago (University of Colorado)
Date: May 13, 2011

By focusing on various cases and methods, the PhD Workshop aims at discussing the status of studies on art in the early modern period. Which challenges do researchers face in dealing with projects on art and the 16th and 17th centuries, both in relation to theory and historiographical discussions? What is at stake right now and how do we deal with the objects of our attention?
Claire Farago, who was one of the pioneers broadening the scope of renaissance and early modern studies, will be supervising the sessions.

We invite PhD students to give a 15 minutes presentation followed by 25 minutes roundtable discussion. The case study should be presented with a special view to the method and the use of theory.
Projects within all subjects are welcome but preferably have to include perspectives on:

- interactions between art and science
- the relation between art and nature
- art and post colonial theory
- the historiographical and interdisciplinary discussions on the period

Preparation for the course will also include reading a few texts and submitting a 1-2 pages introduction about your project for circulation in the group.

Professor Claire Farago is the editor of Re-Reading Leonardo (2009), Transforming Images: New Mexican Santos in-between Worlds (2006), and Reframing the Renaissance (1995). See her profile at http://www.colorado.edu/arts/arthistory/farago.html
In addition, Professor Farago will be giving a lecture at the Aesthetic Seminar at Aarhus University May 12. Building 1584, room 124 at 14.15 p.m. Attendance is free.
