"From one article to the next, this issue of Critique d’art is highly political, shedding light on recent publications in France and abroad, while carefully examining the artist’s position within our fluctuating and troubled reality. These practices and discourses reveal a sense of urgency and an unprecedented form of transversality. The figure of the committed artist has returned in full strength, through a wholehearted involvement in debates introduced by the humanities and social sciences, and a dedication to providing solutions broadly exceeding their critical function. For although it is true that artists have fully entered the field of research, academics have also started using processes to conduct and present their own research which, on the face of it, may seem artistic or fictional. At the time of the first Romantic and Saint-Simonian circles, established as so many embodied communities and counter-models to a mechanical, abstract and centrifugal reality, the task of the artist began to be considered as the privileged mediation between spirit, whatever the latter may be, and the sensible.
